The fishing industry in Sri Lanka is divided into
three main sections. That is,Sea fishing industry , Inland fisheries and Kiwl water fishing industry.

About 90% of the total sea fish production in Sri Lanka is obtained from coastal or coastal fishing grounds. The main fish caught in the coastal waters are sprats, salamanders, squid, herring, ranna, kossa, squid, prawns and lobsters. The main gears used here are I nets and small perforated nets. Also used are bait and handcuffs.

The main species of fish caught in the distant seas are octopus, alagola, kumbalawa, thalapatha, copra, thora, shark, tuna and kelawala. The main fishing gear used here are large perforated floating caramel nets and shark nets.

This fishing industry will strengthen the economy as well as the economy of the fishing community.

Most people use small boats and multi-day vessels.It also uses nets, baits and various tools for fishing. Due to the location of the Great Ocean around Sri Lanka, the fishing community has been able to carry on their industry without any hindrance.
