Do you consider being an influencer a profession? Would you recommend it to your children?

In this era of digitalization and social media, the influencer phenomenon has become increasingly prevalent. Whether it qualifies as a profession or not is a debatable issue, but for me, the discussion has a clear-cut answer, and that's NO, I DON'T CONSIDER IT A PROFESSION. Before I put forth my reasons for my opinion, it is important to mention that some people are doing a good job, but the majority of influencers don't deserve to be called professionals. Here are the reasons to substantiate my viewpoint:

  • A profession requires formal education with well-established regulatory authority. Influencers neither require formal education nor are there any defined regulations for them. Most of them end up creating substandard and at times unethical content; however, some influencers follow the ethics of journalism, and they are doing great.

  • A good profession should be stable and sustainable. We have seen that most influencers arrive and fall off their fame. This transient nature of influencers is also determined by the priority of a consuming community for the content, which keeps on changing with the time and emotions of new social media platforms. Therefore, I don't consider it a profession.

  • All professionals are paid for the service they offer, but the monetary benefit is not the mere perception of professionalism. In contrast, influencers have the main motive of capital gain, and in that race, they dip down to any extent.

  • Lack of any professional body to regulate the influencer community makes them unaccountable and decentralized, a community free to do any mischief and telecast any unethical, immoral, substandard content on social media platforms.

Is there an influencer with whom you feel identified? Why, and what kind of content do you share?

It would be unfair to weigh all the influencers on a single balance because some of them are doing a very good job. There are various categories of content influencers in the market, and I recognize many of them. Let's have a look at them.

First of all, let me begin from the medical education to which I belong. Dr. Najeb is creating authentic and interesting content. He is a role model in the field of medical education. The art of teaching is commendable. His skill of making even complex concepts simpler is adorable. The other teachers in the fields of teaching are also creating authentic and genuine content and abide by community guidelines of all social media platforms, but I personally praise Dr. Najeeb the most.

As for content creation on topics like politics, education, fact-checking, myth-busting, and other general categories of information of concern, I find the content of Dhruv Rathee most reliable. He always creates content after thorough research, and that's always informative He creates genuine, reliable, and neutral content in various categories. His art of delivering content is commendable and praiseworthy.

In the category of trading, I find the content of Adam Khoob most interesting. He creates content about stocks, forex, and cryptos and also shares strategies which are profitable when practiced with discipline.

In the field of religion, I find the content of Dr. Zakir Naik and the late Dr. Israr Ahmad most promising and persuading. The late Dr. Israr is like an ocean of knowledge, and Dr. Zakir Naik is a genius scholar in the fields of competitive religion.

Besides the above-mentioned categories, I adore some other people also in other categories like comedy, motivational speaking, technology, satire, etc.

Do you think the life of an influencer is a role model, why?

The life of the majority of influencers is NOT a role model for the reasons that I mentioned earlier. The influencers who do not fall in the category of those masses can act as a role model for the following reasons:

  • Those influencers are doing their work with sincerity, dedication, honesty, and therefore have the capability to shape the lives of others through their content. Therefore, those influencers are an asset to society, unlike the majority of others who are just in the mood of selling out their content without bothering for the impact of the content on society.

  • The influencers are competent individuals who are able to establish and sustain their identity among the masses and therefore are a lesson for others to learn from them the art of sustaining in the competition and surviving in the cutthroat competition.

  • Recognition of identity of an individual among the masses is the inherited desire of every individual, and therefore social media influencers who are doing a good job are well recognized among the masses and role models in that context too.

  • Most of the social media influencers doing their job well are monetarily sound because they are earning rewards from the social media platforms, and therefore that's also a source of inspiration for others who are otherwise striving for their financial stability.

Do you have to have some kind of training to be an influencer, or can anyone be one?

To be a good influencer, you definitely need some sort of training which is not of a formal nature, but yeah, you need training. Having mentioned earlier that most of the social media influencers do not abide by any community guidelines and create substandard content without any training, it is those influencers who have demoralized the image of this informal profession.

For social media influencers, training is needed in terms of communication or communication skills, audio and video editing skills, search engine optimization training to make content visible, being abreast about the trends in the field of content consumption, etc. Although formal education is not needed by the majority of the social media influencers excluding the education category, there is definitely a need for informal training through YouTube or other mediums to gain requisite skills for competition.
