Ever wondered why there is a foul smelling odor especially under your arm when you sweat? That's Bromhidrosis.

Brohmidrosis is a foul-smelling body odor that emerges when sweat encounters bacteria on the skin. Brohmidrosis can often be treated or prevented through changes in your hygiene habits, though there are medical treatment options as well.

Causes of Bromhidrosis

There are two types of sweat glands in the human skin, they are:

  • The apocrine sweat glands and
  • The eccrine sweat glands

Bromhidrosis is caused by secretions by the apocine sweat glands, although both types of sweat glands can lead to abnormal body odor.
Sweats from the aprocrine gland tend to be thicker than that produced by the eccrine gland.

Apocrine glands are located primarily in the underarm, breast and groin region. This sweat gland is colorless and odorless; but the offensive smell in people with bromhidrosis is caused when bacteria on the body start to break down dried sweat.

Treatment For Bromhidrosis
The treatment approaches for bromhidrosis is dependent on the severity of the condition. In minor cases, preventive measure is enough but for more serious cases, removal of the offending sweat glands may be the answer. Other treatment options include:

  • Liposuction
  • Home remedies, like some basic hygiene strategies like frequent washjng, with an antiseptic soap and using strong deodorant and washing your clothes regularly.
  • Botox
  • Surgery

For some people, bromhidrosis could be a sign of medical condition like:

  • Intertrigo (skin rash)
  • Obesity
  • trichomycosis axillaris (an infection of the hair follicles under the arm)
  • type 2 diabetes
  • erythrasma (a superficial skin infection)
