Contest : Protected animals in my country part 12
Hello, friends welcome to my post in which I have discussed "Protected animals in my country" as part of my participation in this 👉contest.
Nigeria is a big country that has boundaries with other countries and due to the large forest, there are wild animals in most of the forest in the country some of these animals have become protected animals in Nigeria and I will be sharing with you the population status, legal protections and habitat challenges of these protected animals.
Cross River Gorilla 🦍 (Gorilla Diehli)
The population status of this animal in Cross River State Nigeria is about 300 gorillas. Based on environmental and habitat challenges this animal is hunted for bushmeat by hunters which they are equally an expansion of human settlements near their habitats.
The reason why the animal is typical in Nigeria is because it is found in the highland forests of the border that separates Nigeria and Cameroon. The wildlife conservation and forestry law of Cross River State is the law that protects this animal
Nigerian Cameroon Chimpanzee
The population status of this animal in Nigeria is less than 6,000 animals in the wild based on my findings. Based on environmental and habitat challenges, there is deforestation due to urbanization, agriculture, and logging in the country. Also, these animals are been targeted by hunters as bushmeat which can be traded in the local market.
The environmental challenge of this animal is climate change which usually affects the availability of foods in the forest. The reason why this animal is typically found in Nigeria is because of the available rainforest in Nigeria which is chimpanzee is best known for. Chimpanzee is protected under the Nigeria "Endangered Species Act and listed in gh site of CITE. In most national parks chimpanzees are established.
Africa Forest Elephant
The population status of elephants in Nigeria is reducing due to habitat and poaching destruction in Nigeria. Based on environmental and habitat challenges, it is targeted for ivory trade, which also land use for agriculture purposes, and logging which also their are affected by climate change that affects vegetation and water.
Elephant is typically found in big forests like Yankari Game Reserve and Omo Forest Reserves in Nigeria. The elephant is protected under the Nigeria National Parks Service Act.
