WEEK THREE LESSON

Greetings to all the kids.Trust you are enjoying the holiday.I wish to continue keeping you busy with the lesson series.

Last week, we looked at Subtraction of Two Digit Numbers.This week we shall look at Subtraction of Three Digit Numbers.

Subtraction of Three Digit Numbers

Three digit numbers are numbers that have exactly three digits.The first number from the right is Unit,the second is the Tens while the third is the Hundred.When subtracting three digit numbers,it is compulsory that you start from the right-hand-side of the numbers.

If in a case where the number on top is less,you will have to borrow from the next number.When you borrow from the next number,that number you borrowed is taken to be 10.This is because the numbers are in base ten.I hope you understand?

Now let us solve some problems to help us appreciate the topic.

Examples
•1.) Subtract 113 from 538.

First start from the right-hand-side by subtracting 3 from 8 to get 5,then subtract 1 from 3 to get 2 and then subtracting 1 from 5 to get 4.

•2.)Subtract 240 from 771

First start from the right-hand-side by subtracting 0 from 1 to get 1,then subtract 4 from 7 to get 3 and then subtracting 2 from 7 to get 5.

3.)Subtract 114 from 642

First start from the right-hand-side by subtracting 4 from 2.It can't go,so you borrow 1 from 4.That borrowed number would become 10 and adding to 2 gives 12,so subtracting 4 from 12 gives 8.Next, subtracting 1 from 3 to get 2,lastly subtract 1 from 6 to get 5.

•4.)Subtract 189 from 441

First start from the right-hand-side by subtracting 9 from 1.It can't go,so you borrow 1 from 4.That borrowed number would become 10 and adding to 1 gives 11,so subtracting 9 from 11 gives 2.Next, subtracting 8 from 3,it can't still go,so you borrow from 4.The borrowed number becomes 10 which when added to 3 gives 13, subtracting 8 from 13 gives 5.Lastly subtract 1 from 3 to get 2.
