BONE HEALTH
BONE HEALTH
Good day dear steem kids and parents community members. I hope we are all strong, healthy and fit? Well I sure am.
However if you are not currently feeling too well, what could be the problem? Is it bone disease?
Today I will write about bone health, common bone diseases and how we can avoid, prevent or manage bone disease.
What Is Bone
Bone is actually a unique tissue. Bone contains cells that not only build the hard outer layer that gives the skeleton strength but also break it down allowing the bone to grow and reshape itself during childhood. These cells are also responsible for its repairs.
Bone also serves as a store for minerals such as calcium. The longest and strongest bone in the human body is the femur or thigh bone.
Although bones repair themselves faster than they breakdown during youth, causing an increase in bone mass; as we age , precisely after we reach 30 years of age, we lose more bone than our body produces causing a decrease in bone mass. As a result, the bones may become weak and brittle leading to health challenges and bone disease.
Some Bone Diseases
OSTEOPOROSIS
This is a bone condition where bone becomes weak and vulnerable to breaking as a result of low bone density. A diet low in calcium and vitamin D can increase the risk of developing this bone disease. However, it is noted that women are more susceptible to this disease hence, they should be extra careful about their diet and lifestyle. Avoid smoking, heavy drinking and being in bed for a long period of time.
SYMPTOMS OF OSTEOPOROSIS
Loss of height and back pain
Sudden fractures especially after a minor accident
Brittle or stunted nails
Receding gums: it occurs when the jaw loses bone mass.
2 OSTEOARTHRITIS
Commonly known as arthritis ,this is a bone disease that is characterized by the wearing down of the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of bones at a joint. Arthritis usually occurs in the hands, knees, hips and spine. However it can occur in any joint in the body.
SYMPTOMS OF ARTHRITIS
- Difficulty in walking
- Severe pain in the joints
- Joint stiffness upon waking
HOW TO PREVENT OR MANAGE BONE DISEASE
- Eat foods rich in calcium, vitamin D and protein such as eggs , milk, fish and leafy green vegetables.
- Exercise regularly
- Avoid being overweight as being overweight increases the strain on the joints and weakens bones.
- Avoid smoking and limit alcohol
Overall, maintain a healthy lifestyle to promote healthy bones and stay strong even till old age. Thanks for reading.
