Hello friends,

This month is a special celebration month for Sri Lankans. We celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil New Year on 14 th of April. As a multicultural country new year is a huge celebration and it is also called the Auspicious Day. I will share about our new year function and what we did on that day with you. I think our kids and parents from other countries will love to see our celebrations.

We celebrate the new year when the Earth completes one revolution around the sun and when Earth starts a new round. That is considered the real new year. There are Auspicious times for everything on that day. First to the beginning of the new year.

After the new year arrives in all the houses we light our hearths and keep a pot of milk and let it boil. We let the milk boil and overflow which represent our wealth and health in good conditions in the coming year as well. We wish for a good life when the milk is overflowing.

Then the head of the house, our Mother starts to cook the milk rice which is our symbol of prosperity and then arranges the table with pre-prepared sweetmeats like oil cakes, cookies, cakes, bananas, green gram laddu, milk rice, etc... Here you can see how in our house we prepared the dining table for the new year. But it may vary from one house to another. In our house, we made oil cakes, laddu, green gram laddu, milk rice with spicy onion sambal and we kept a banana as well.

After eating we share food with our neighbours. Then in the villages and towns there are different new year celebrations organized. We can go to those events and then participate for the new year sports and games. new year games are special as we don't do those games in any other occasion.

In this image you can see two most common games we do for New year. The pillow fight and pancha dameema. Pillow fight is done my gens and pancha dameema by ladies. Apart from these games there is a huge variety of games such as, sac jumping, taking the line, climbing the greese tree, eating the hanging buns etc.. The speciality of these games are that we all without an age barrier can do the games.

These games improve personal qualities like unity, friendship, health and mental fitness. There are so many games that are now not in use as well. The villages, schools and other institutes conduct these Aurudu celebrations as not to let the new generation forget these games.

Normally after the aurudu games it is lunchtime. Some of our relatives visit us during lunchtime. So I also have to share our lunch table with you. We also had a few visitors on Aurudu Day. We also made a delicious lunch for our visitors. We made white rice, potato tempered curry, Dhal curry, Tender Jack curry , and Spicy fish curry. For that we had made cutlets, fried sausages and papapdam. Everyone said the lunch is delicious.

Greetings appreciated @nadeesew.

One of the things that I like the most about Steemit is how we can learn about customs and traditions from parts of the world that we will never be able to visit in our lives.

I live in South America, and I never imagined that in Sri Lanka they celebrate the new year in mid-April.

I was able to read on Google that Sinhala Avurudu/Tamil Puththandu occurs when the Sun moves from Meena Rashiya to Mesha Rashiya ending a 12 month cycle.
This is As you say: "...new year when the Earth completes one revolution around the sun and when the Earth begins a new revolution..."
It is exactly one complete revolution. Surprising. We have many things to learn from the ancient culture.

I pray to Almighty God to always bless your table and fill it with abundant food.

Ayubowan...

In another order of ideas, I would like to invite you to learn about the SP delegation program that we offer at Project Hope. We have just surpassed 250K SP, thanks to our delegator friends. This voting power allows us to distribute among our delegators 100% of the manual curation rewards we make. Our current voting power offers 11% APR, which we hope to increase in the coming months if more people like you join our program.
