Hello friends,

As a community with multi nationalities, I thought of sharing a special event in our place. As a Buddhist family, we have different religious events taking place in our home. So today I want to share one of such events as I felt that you have not seen or heard earlier.

This is a pooja that we do for Goddess Paththini. Every year in the month of April we give this special almsgiving. As you can see there are 7 ladies who are sitting for the almsgiving. These 7 ladies represent the 7 lives of Goddess Paththini. It is believed that this pooja is a blessing for a family.

The 7 ladies are seated on the floor and as you can see they wear full white as a dress code.

After they enter the house they sit in their positions and we distribute the special food items we have made for them. After that they start chanting the stotra for Goddess Paththini and they request blessings from the Goddess for our family. Paththini Stotra is a special long poem that has lots of blessings. These ladies are also dedicated for this stotra chanting so that their blessings are realized by the Goddess.

The family members should wear white colour and they should be seated infront of the ladies and if we know the stotra we can also chant with these ladies. The ladies should be vegetarian and they should have a complete family with husband and children. Unmarried, divorced or ladies without children cannot sit here as they are not completed to represent goddess paththini.

Now I will explain to you about the food given in the almsgiving. We have made milk rice, oil cakes, rice flour laddu, sesame rolls, green gram sweetmeat, milk and flour pieces (kiriya), and Banana. All these food items are distributed in the quantity of 7 each. The food items were not tasted before giving the almsgiving. That is the most important factor. At the pooja, the ladies taste small amounts of each of the food items and they can take the rest of the food home. Sometimes they share it with pregnant women or people who have different illnesses. The food is considered to be blessed to eat after the stotra chanting.
