"You will have your child like a Hebrew woman"

In my community, such a wish is often followed by a resounding Amen! and another Amen!!, Just to make sure. The idea is rooted deep in a story found at Exodus 1:15-22, a lie that was told to protect back then is now killing many today.

The Story.

Pharaoh Thutmose I of Egypt who ruled some time between 1503 to 1593 BC, out of fear that the Hebrews were becoming so numerous is believed to have issued a decree that all male child born to the Hebrews should be killed by the midwives.
But out of fear of offending the God of the Hebrews, the midwives formulated a lie, telling the pharaoh that the Hebrew women were exceptionaly strong and would put to birth on their own before the midwives arrived.
This was a clever ruse that saved the lives of the babies and at the same time avoided the wrath of pharaoh the king.

The Hebrew Women's Birth

The Hebrew women in that story did not possess any spacial abilities or strength when it came to their birth experience. The midwives had fabricated the story, in fact child birth was a risky and potentially dangerous experience for Hebrew women as it was for other women as well.
Jacob for example lost his wife Rachel in childbirth, moreover, his mother Re·bekʹah also had difficulties giving birth to him and his brother Esau.
Additionally, 1 Samuel 4:19 shows that some Hebrew women had experienced complications during childbirth. Highliting the common struggle and uncertenties that came with childbirth in those times.

That Same Lie kills today

Locally, there is this widespread believed that a stress free birth experience is a blessing from God and a sign of His favour often referd to as "like the Hebrew women" quoting the Exodus story out of context. Unfortunately, this belief has fueled the stigmatisation of women who have had cesarean section births. Prepetuating a harmful notion that they are weak and less favoured by God.
This misconception has resulted in many women feeling and being pressured to go for traditional birth methods even against the recomendation of their doctor. Putting the lives of both the mother and unborn child at serious risk.

Conclusion

There was no such thing as "the Hebrew women's birth", so take good care of yourselves, follow proven medical procedures and stay safe.
