HELLO MY WONDERFUL FRIENDS!

How has your day been? I trust you all had a splendid day! Mine was amazing and I'm here today to write on this important topic: "how to teach your teenagers internet safety" I know a lot of parents are concerned about their teen's safety especially now that all news report is about Cyber bullies, identity thieves, and sexual predators. So parents are concern for good reason because it could be that their teenage child is often online and may seem they are exposed to the dangers.
Well you can teach your children internet safety but first of all these are some of the things you need to know about online life.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ONLINE:

know that your teens can access the internet with their mobile phones: some parents set the rules that computer be placed in a common area in the house, that is good, but they should also know that their teenage child can connect to the internet with their smartphone or tablet, So they have more access to the online world than you can ever imagine and without your supervision.

Some teens used to spend excessive time online: some teenagers admit that they spend excessive time on internet, and not that they intended to, sometimes they just want to use 5 minutes to check on their email but they ended up spending more hours watching online videos, they realize that they need self control.

Teens can reveal online more than they should: some dubious people can find some sensitive information about a particular teen through their posts, comments, or photos. this information may be about where he or she lives, and goes to school and at what time no one in the family will be at home.

Some teenagers do not know the consequences of what they posts online: they don't understand that there is repercussion for whatever they posted online, sometimes embarrassing photos or comments can be discovered later on. It could be by a potential employer who carries out a background check on the job applicants and this can prevented the child from getting the job. I had an experience on this, back then when I applied for an IT(Industrial Training) work in the bank all the applicants were asked for their Facebook account link and everyone who had different social media name from their real name was qualified.

Despite all these know that the internet is not an enemy rather using it unwisely is what is leading to trouble, it is just like driving a car some people used to have auto accidents but it doesn't make driving a car wrong, same principle is applicable to the use of internet all your teen need is to drive cautiously.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

TEACH YOUR TEEN PRIORITIES AND TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS: your teen needs to learn how to put important things in first place, help your child to grow into a responsible adult so in this case family communication, chores, and homework are more important than casual internet use. If you notice that the amount of time your teen is spending online is concern, simply set limits, in this case using a timer is necessary.

TEACH YOUR TEENAGER TO THINK BEFORE POSTING: help your teenager to always ask himself or herself question like: how will this photo affect my reputation? could the comment I'm about to post hurt someone? will I feel embarrassed if my parents or any other adult see this comment or photo? What will they conclude about me and what will I think of someone who posted such a photo or comment?

TEACH TEENS TO LIVE BY VALUES NOT JUST RULES: definitely you won't be able to look over your teenage shoulders, your goal should not be to control your children but to help them develop discernment, to help them to be able to distinguish right and wrong. Do not stressed on rules and punishment as The main point rather emphasize on their moral sense. Ask him or her the kind of reputation he or she wants to have, the type of character trait he or she wants to be known for. Parents your goals should be to help your teens make wise decisions whether you are there with them or not.

CONCLUSIONS:

Navigating the internet needs good judgement and not technological ability so your guidance as parents cannot be overemphasized because it is absolutely true that your children know more about technology but you as a parent know more about life. Parents before your child uses online make sure that he or she has consistently demonstrate the admirable character traits we are striving to cultivate characters like kindness tolerance inclusiveness because this will definitely get tested. Thanks for reading through! I love you all 💕
