"Movie time is over and so stand up from that couch and off to your rooms now, It's time to sleep!," My mother would say to I and my siblings when were we still toddlers and teenagers sitting in front of the television immediately it's past 9.pm. My mom never joked with our health and as so because sleep is a part of enhancing it too, she makes sure we get the right amount of sleep we need as kids.
When we get to sleep, it's like an engine that is turned off and there's no physical work going around. The engine which now refers to our body, gets to be refreshed and ready to get working with agility. What is sleep? Why do we need sleep? What are the tips for sleep? What is relaxation and it benefits?

Sleep is a natural and daily/periodic state of rest for the brain, mind and the body where the eyes is being closed and there's practically inactivess. In this state, we can say that the activity of the brain have been altered and there is suspension in the consciousness of the surrounding. Sleep is an essential part of our daily lives, needed for physical and mental growotb. It can be characterised by:
- Slower breathing and heart rate
- Repair of tissue and immune system regulation
- Stress relief and emotional regulation
- Reduced consciousness and awareness
- No physical movement or activity
- Low body's temperature
- Mind strengthening and learning process.
For kids and parents sleep is important for many reasons:
- Physical Health: sleep helps the body to repair tissues, grow bones, tissue and also strengthen our immune system.
- Brain function: Sleep helps the brain to do it work well, including learning, focus, memory and decision making.
- Mood and emotions: sleep helps to control emotions and also reduce anxiety stress and even depression.
- Energy and alertness: sleep have the ability to give us the energy to stay awake and focus during the day's activities.
- Growth and development: Most especially in children and teens, sleep is very important for growth and development.
- Immune system: sleep help to fight away infections and inflammation in the body.
- Cognitive Function (brain function): Sleep helps with critical, creativity and problems solving.
- Quality of life: For a good, happy, healthy and productive life, sleep is very much essential.
Here are some tips that might be helpful for a better sleep:
- Stick to a sleep schedule: Always go to bed and wake up at the same time everyday, including on weekends.
- Create a bedtime routine: Develop a calming routine before you sleep like meditation, reading or a warm bath.
- Enhance your sleep environment: Make your bedroom light free, cool, quiet and comfortable. Get a soft and comfortable mattress and good pillows.
- Reduce the exposure of your eyes to screens before bed time
- Avoiding doing exercises, playing video games or watching any kind of movies before bedtime.
- Limit the intake of alcohol and caffeine (for adults).
- Get regular daily exercises at the appropriate time.
- Avoid heavy meals before bed.
Relaxation is a state of being free from tension , anxiety and stress that affects the mind and body. When we go through the process of relaxation, we tend to be able to cope with the everyday life. There are many ways to practice relaxation like; listening to music, take a break from work, get creative things to do, spend time in nature or with nature, have massage sessions, breathing deeply, meditation and even trips or vacations.
Constant relaxation can bring in a good number of countless benefits. They include:
- Pain relief: Relaxation can help to reduce muscle tension and pain, making it beneficial for severe pain management.
- Improved sleep: Relaxation can help prepare the body for a good sleep, leading to quality sleep.
- Reduced stress and anxiety: Relaxation helps to ease the mind and the body of stress and anxiety.
- Focus and concentration: A mind that is relaxed is more focused and able to concentrate better
- Increases digestive process: regular relaxation can improve the digestion process of food in the body and can reduce symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
- Relaxation can help to lower the blood pressure and reducing the high rate of chronic heart diseases.
- Stronger Immune System: When we get stressed they immune system gets wicked and so relaxation can help boost it.
In conclusion, sleep and relaxation are essentials to attain and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Sleep plays a major role in physical and mental revival, while relaxation can help boost mood, reduce stress and anxiety and improve the overall well-being. By ordering sleep and relaxation techniques into your daily routine, you can enhance your health, increased productivity and quality of life.
