HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR CHILDREN ’S HANDWRITING
My son Isaac is five years plus and is currently in nursery three. By September, 2024 , he will be enrolled into primary one.
I traveled to Lagos Nigeria in April, 2023 from Nasarawa State in search for greener pastures haven’t lost my previous teaching job in abuja. I came back home in November , and discovered that he can recite and identify letters and objects very well but his hand writing is terrible . His younger sister who is in nursery described it as jagula jagula .She will say dad , I saac is writing jagula jagula.
It became a matter of great concerns to me because I know in primary one this days in Nigeria, you are no longer taught how to hold pen and write. You are suppose to just copy from the board.
Most of the letters of the 26 alphabet A-Z are form from combining strokes. I started by teaching him how to draw right stroke \ , left stroke /, open curve ¢, close curve ) vertical stroke |, and dash -
You can get a 2A excervise book or improvise just as I have done and begin to teach him how to combine the strokes to form letters. For example, letter A= left stroke /, right stroke \ and a dash - at the middle. B= a vertical stroke |, close curve ) and another close curve ) ,etc.
Next, two letters word
Parents should see themselves as the first teacher of their children, and should always go through their children books to see where they are deficient and work out modality on how to improve it . Parents should always complement the teachers effort at home by continuing from where the teacher stop in the school until there is a permanent change in the behavior of that child.
My son is now improving by the day.
