Bus is known as the network of wires or electronic pathways. Bus is used for connecting major components of a computer. The total bus connection presented in a single computer is known as system bus. System bus is the combination of 3 buses. They are:

Data bus
Address bus
Control bus

Data bus used to carry information, an address bus is used to determine where it should be sent, and a control bus to determine its operation. It was developed to reduce costs. Let’s discuss about those buses broadly.

Data Bus

Transferring data within microprocessor and memory, input or output devices is the main task of data bus. It is a bidirectional bus, as the microprocessor requires both to send or receive data. For transferring signals, each wire is used corresponding to a single bit of binary data. As a result, we can say that, a greater width allows grater amount of data to be transferred at the same time.

Address Bus

It is a group of wires or lines that are used to transfer the address of a memory or input/output device.
It is unidirectional as we may only transfer address from CPU to address bus and from address bus to memory or input/output. The maximum addressing capacity of the bus depends on the width of the address bus. The addresses are transferred in the binary format, and each line of the address bus carrying a single binary digit. Therefore, the maximum addressing capacity is equal to two to the power of the number of lines present(2^lines).

Control Bus

Control bus is used for processing data, i.e. what will be done with the selected memory location. Read, Write and Opcode Fetch are some of the control signals. Control bus helps us to perform various operation. This bus is also known as the dedicated bus because all timing signals are generated according to the control signal. At last, we can say that control bus is responsible for all controlling signals.

Conclusion

As a result of using buses, we can efficiently handle every operation on a computer. Computer buses plays a vital role on computer by transferring data, address and control signals.
