How to stop the feeling of needing to poop…
were my exact words to Google on 15th August 2019. Within this day lurked my longest three hours on earth! Did the six cups of coffee and how I drowned my feet all night – 10PM to 5AM – in water, preparing for the next day’s examination, have a hand in this?
Arriving the exam hall late, the urgent signal to my brain was that: ‘I needed to poop immediately’, but the invigilator’s voice hit me. Eyeglasses, way down his nostrils; brows, sharply tilted upwards; he hauled at me that familiar professional glance: ‘Young lady, you’re already late. Get into your seat at once, will you?’ Performing my reps of kegels in efforts to tuck back the missiles wildly protesting within my bowels, I hurtled to my seat. Google said I had ‘bowel incontinence', and proffered ‘reps of kegels’ as solution. ‘Sweet girl, wetin na?’ came my best friend’s voice. ‘Babe, I wan shit’, I retorted. ‘Eyaah! Sorry!’ she said, apparently holding back her urge to laugh out loud. ‘My mama say saliva dey work’, she added in Pidgin English. ‘Rub am now-now for your navel, e go hold am’.
I lathered my navel with saliva, resisting every urge to fart – as a chilly voice had already warned that farts are fatal at this point. The saliva therapy, in collaboration with endless kegels kept me through the three-hour long exam.
Inspirations are housed in weirdest sources. During difficulties that need comic relief, I remind myself that surviving three hours of steaming bowel movements, and still making a ‘B’ in the course, means there is no limit to what I can achieve.
