Today I went to the market. I bought several items from different stores. Each shopkeeper first wrapped my product in a paper wrap and then handed it to me in a polythene bag. I often go to three or four stores. Everyone gave me a separate polythene bag. So I got three to four polythene bags. Every day on my way back from college, I buy some fried food. They also give the food in a paper packet first and then give it to me in a polythene bag. I often take classes two and a half to 275 days a year. So I only get 275 polythene bags a year from food stores, let alone how many.

I was walking in the morning. I saw some plants over there. But alas! I saw some polythene and plastic things also.

My birthday gifts. Alas! They also contain polythene and plastic.

Thus about 75,000 tons of polythene bags are used annually. Bangladesh law prohibits the use of polythene bags. But we do see polythene bags being used freely. Even today I have seen a policeman buy nuts in polythene bags.

ESDO has assessed the situation of use of polythene bags in the country from April 2020 to March 2021 through Baseline Survey. It can be seen that the total waste generated from the polythene bags used in Dhaka is about 5,998 tons and it is about 8,433 tons in the whole country.

Representatives of various ministries, members of NGOs and organizations and teachers of various educational institutions participated in the session and expressed the need for strict enforcement of polythene bag ban from root to top.

Experts say that

in order to tackle the harmful situation of using illegal polythene bags, we should immediately take positive steps.

I consider myself an environmentally conscious person. Even then, if I use 275 bags a year, can I really be called an eco-friendly person? Of course not. What will happen to our world if we do not take action? To many, my words may seem absurd or the language of a book. But once you think about it, are the words wrong? What kind of world do you want to give your child? A world filled with sewage, pieces of polythene in water, fertile soil rich in polythene where no crops are grown, is surely not what you want for your child. But please be a little aware from today. Using less than 10 polythene bags a year, less than 10 polythene bags per year for 100 people like you, can stop the use of about 10,000 polythene bags a year.
