My Favourite Festival And It's History

My favourite festival would be the EID-UL-FITR. The eid-ul-fitr is a festival celebrated by Muslims to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan. The month of Ramadan is the month were Muslim observe fasting for 29-30 days from sunrise till sunset. It is a spacial month for the Muslims because the holy Quran was revealed to the prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) in that month. The Eid prayer consist of two unique rakat. Unlike other prayers that has one takbir at the beginning, the Eid prayer has 7 takbirs.

It was reported that the Eid-ul-fitr was originated by our prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) after his hijra from mecca to Madina. It was reported that Anas (RA), a companion of the prophet said that, when the prophet migrated to Madina, he found the people of Madina celebrating two special days. So the prophet (P.B.U.H) said that Allah(S.W.A) had fixed two days of festivity which are EID-UL-FITR and EID-al-adha.

How It Is Celebrated

Though in Islam we have two festivals as mentioned above, but my favorite still remains Eid-ul-fitr. Over here in Nigeria, we mostly refer to them as small sallah and big sallah. On both festival, it is Sunnah to take a bath, cut your nails, put on your best of clothes, put on perfume (preferably one that doesn't contain alcohol) and head to the mosque for the Eid prayer. It is also Sunnah not to follow the same route to you took when going to the mosque but another route when coming back. During Eid-ul-fitr, there isn't much work to be done. What mostly happens is people sharing out gifts and going to visit relations and friends. EID-al-adha is the festival in which sacrifice are made with rams in the name of the most high. But Eid-ul-fitr continues to remain my favorite. Throughout the Eid season, it is advised that when you come across your fellow brother or sister in Islam you say to them "Taqabbal Allahu Minna Wa Minkum". Which means "May Allah accept (good deeds) from us and from you."

Is it celebrated like few generations ago or newer generations lack awareness and are insensitive to their own culture?

Eid celebration is all about spreading love. All the traditions that has been carried out throughout history from older generation is still being carried out by the newer generation and it's not about to change. These are procedures that our beloved prophet practices on Eid day and we are to follow his examples (S.A.W). So yes I feel the traditions of Eid has been maintained throughout the course of time from the older generations to the newer generations and I pray that the upcoming generations will also fall in line. Ameen.

Conclusion

Eid continues to be my favourite time of the year. You could just perceive the smell of love, peace and happiness in the air. It Is that time when you get to see family relations or friends you haven't seen in a long time. It's also that Time of year where you get to pray the Eid prayer and witness chills running down your spin as the imam makes those beautiful 7 takbirs. A happy Eid-ul-fitr to all. Thank you very much for reading everyone. God bless you.
