Activities of Daily Living are a term that describes the normal daily activities that people perform without assistance. The basics are ADLs - bathing, eating, personal hygiene, feeding, mobility, etc. The term was first coined by Sidney Katz in 1950.
Our modern education is unable to give us about the deep insight of life As a result, most of the population is afraid or unable to defend their position and rights, make clear and balanced decisions, analyze the situation
Activities of Daily Living may vary by individual, as some may require a little assistance to perform such activities. Performance of these ADLs determines what type of long-term care a person may need, such as Medicare, insurance , Medicaid, etc., as the person ages. Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs) A person who turns 65 may eventually need care. Convenience , like a child, because they are unable to perform certain ADLs. Instrumental activities of daily living or IADLs help determine the level of assistance an elderly or disabled person needs. IADLs include:
- Personal Finance Management – This includes paying bills, working within a budget, managing. Avoiding financial assets , scams etc.
- Food preparation – This means cooking and preparing food from scratch – planning, cooking, cleaning, stocking, arranging kitchen utensils, etc.
- Transportation – ability to drive or use public transport etc.
- Shopping – the ability to purchase clothing and other items needed in daily life.
- Medication management – taking the correct dose of prescribed medication.
- Housework – doing dishes, dusting, vacuuming, and maintaining a hygienic place.
Importance of Activities of Daily Living, A concern with performing Activities of Daily Living, comes as a person ages and if they are able to live independently without assistance. The importance of Activities of Daily Living, comes into the picture as it affects a person's ability to do housework, shopping, preparing food, managing themselves. Personal Finance etc. It can also put a person at risk from taking the wrong dose of medication, falling down the stairs or slipping in the shower.
