On the other side of the sky: Does faith involve sacrifices?/ Al otro lado del cielo: ¿La fe implica sacrificios?
Everything was in God's hands: Sarah spoke with Hagar, her slave, and Abraham had a son with her; but then a conflict arose in the family, since Sarah, against all scientific predictions, became pregnant with the grace of God, and had a son she called Isaac.
But God wanted to test Abraham's faith further, and told him that if he believed in him, he should take Isaac to the mountain and sacrifice him. Abraham, without telling Sarah, goes to the mountain to fulfill God's command, and at the moment he was going to sacrifice his son, the angel said:
Do not lay your hand on the boy, nor do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son from me (Gen 22:12).
NOTE: This was not Abraham's only son, since Hagar had already given birth to Ishmael. But that is not the issue at this time. The truth is that the story of Abraham has been used as a reference so that in all the religions that exist in the world, faith in God is associated with sacrifices and penances. That is precisely what the movie "The Other Side of Heaven" is about, which is based on a true story.
When John made his long trip to Tonga, he left his girlfriend in Idaho, a beautiful girl, who was besieged by other young men in the region to marry her. However, she decided to wait for John to complete his mission, which lasted two years.
During his stay in Tonga, John faced many difficult situations: he had to learn the Tongan language and their customs. But his biggest challenge was witnessing a hurricane that devastated almost the entire area. John was about to die, since there was almost no food in Tonga, so the "Minister of another religion", seeing him so young, and already being very old, gave John a jar of jam so that he could eat something, while the provisions that the government had offered for four days after the hurricane arrived, but which arrived much later, when a large part of the population had died of hunger and disease.
As expected, John is saved, the Minister dies and the help for the people finally arrives. Two years after John has been in Tonga, he receives a letter in which the Minister of the Mormons authorizes him to return. He is received by his family and his girlfriend. Shortly after, John marries the young woman and they start a family.
The film is set in the fifties.
1.- They normally go in pairs.
2.- They can be assigned to various countries as missionaries. While they are assuming the commitment of missionaries they do not receive any salary, it is their family that is in charge of covering all their expenses.
3.- The time allocated for missions ranges from 6 months to 24 months.
4.- Missionaries must not be married or have descendants.
But what impacted me most about the Mormon religion was the life of its highest representative Joseph Smith. Here I share these facts with you:
On April 6, 1830, he founded the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This event provoked great opposition to Smith, but he also gained followers, many of whom worked as missionaries.
In 1835, Doctrine and Covenants appeared, a book that collects his revelations on the organization of the sect.
In 1839, he created a new headquarters in Commerce, Illinois, and continued with his charismatic leadership. Rumors, later confirmed, that Mormons practiced polygamy caused a schism in the Mormon community and intensified external opposition to his Church. Although he only recognized one, it is said that Smith had more than 27 wives.
In Illinois, he ruled a theocratic city-state as prophet, mayor, chief judge, and commander of a 5,000-man militia.
In 1844 he was secretly anointed earthly king while campaigning for the U.S. presidency.
And to answer the question of whether faith implies sacrifices?
I will say yes, for those who do NOT have power. But for the powerful it implies benefits. Will this be similar to politics? Yes, and a thousand times yes.
The film is based on an autobiographical book by John Grober.
It belongs to the drama genre.
It was first shown in 2001.
En manos de Dios estaba todo: Sara habló con Agar, su esclava, y Abraham tuvo con ella un hijo; pero luego se creó un conflicto en la familia, ya que Sara, contra todo pronóstico científico, salió embarazado con la gracia de Dios, y tuvo a un hijo que llamó Isaac.
Pero Dios quiso probar más la fe de Abraham, y le dijo que si creía en él, llevara a Isaac a la montaña y lo sacrificara. Abraham, sin decirle nada a Sara, va a la montaña a cumplir el mandato de Dios, y en el momento en que iba a sacrificar a su hijo, el ángel dijo:
No extiendas tu mano contra el muchacho, ni le hagas nada. Porque ahora sé que temes a Dios, ya que no me has rehusado tu hijo, tu único (Gn 22:12).
OJO: Este no era el único hijo de Abrahm, pues ya Agar había dado a luz a Ismael. Pero ese no es el tema en este momento. Lo cierto es que la historia de Abraham se ha utilizado como referencia para que en todas las religiones que existen en el mundo se asocie a la fe en Dios con sacrificios y penitencias. Precisamente de eso trata la película "Al otro lado del cielo", la cual está basada en una historia real.
Cuando Jhon hizo su largo viaje a Tonga, dejó en Idaho a su novia, una linda muchacha, que era asediada por otros jóvenes de la región para casarse con ella. Sin embargo, esta decidió esperar a que Jhon cumpliera su misión, la cual duró dos años.
En su estadía en Tonga, Jhon se enfrentó a muchas situaciones difíciles: tuvo que aprender el idioma tongano, las costumbres de estos. Pero su reto más grande fue presenciar un huracán que devastó casi toda la zona. John estaba a punto de morir, ya que casi no había alimentos en Tonga, entonces el "Ministro de otra religión" viéndolo tan joven, y ya estando él muy viejo, le dio a Jhon un frasco de mermelada para que comiera algo, mientras llegaban las provisiones que el gobierno había ofrecido para cuatro días después del huracán, pero que llegaron mucho tiempo después, cuando gran parte de la población había muerto de hambre y de enfermedades.
Como era de esperarse, Jhon se salva, el Ministro muere y la ayuda para el pueblo llega, por fin. A los dos años de estar Jhon en Tonga, recibe una carta en la que el MInistro de los mormones lo autoriza a regresar. Él es recibido por su familia y por su novia. Al poco tiempo, Jhon se casa con la joven y forman una familia.
La película está ambientada en los años cincuenta.
1.- Normalmente andan en pareja.
2.- Pueden ser asignados a varios países como misioneros. Mientras estén asumiendo el compromiso de misioneros no reciben sueldo alguno, es la familia de ellos la encargada de cubrir todos sus gastos.
3.- El tiempo destinado para las misiones va desde los 6 meses hasta los 24 meses.
4.- Los misioneros no deben estar casados ni tener descendientes.
Pero lo que más me impactó sobre la religión mormona fue la vida de su máximo representante Joseph Smith. Por acá les comparto estos datos:
El 6 de abril de 1830 fundó la Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días. Este hecho provocó una gran oposición hacia Smith, pero también logró seguidores, muchos de los cuales trabajaron como misioneros.
En 1835 apareció Doctrinas y Convenios, un libro que recoge sus revelaciones en materia de organización de la secta.
En 1839 creó un nuevo cuartel general en Commerce, Illinois, y continuó con su liderazgo carismático. Los rumores, confirmados más tarde, de que los mormones practicaban la poligamia, provocaron un cisma en la comunidad mormónica e hicieron que se intensificara la oposición externa hacia su Iglesia. Aunque sólo reconoció a una, se dice que Smith contó con más de 27 esposas.
En Illinois, gobernó una ciudad estado teocrática como profeta, alcalde, juez principal y comandante de una milicia de 5.000 hombres.
En 1844 fue ungido secretamente rey terrestre mientras hacía campaña por la presidencia de Estados Unidos.
Y para dar respuesta a la pregunta sobre si ¿La fe implica sacrificios?
Diré que sí, para los que NO tienen poder. Pero para los poderosos implica beneficios. ¿Se parecerá esto a la política? Sí, y mil veces sí.

It was interesting to read about the young man and his dedication to missionary goal, it is not easy and also there are many who do not support that but still those people they fully live their live for the bigger goal.
