Hola, mis queridos, hoy estoy muy contento porque mi mejor amigo y compañero de clase Miguel viene a mi casa. Vamos a hacer juntos las tareas de la escuela. No son muchas las ocasiones en las que me está permitido invitar a amigos, pues casi nunca nos sobra comida para ofrecerles. Por eso mis padres y mi abuela nunca invitan a nadie a venir a casa. De lo contrario, pasaríamos por alto la cena. De su parte, mi hermana no tiene amigos tan cercanos como para invitarlos a venir a casa. Sus mejores amigas están en Córdoba, donde las dejó cuando nos mudamos para Buenos Aires. Mejor dicho, su mejor amiga no fue, al fin y al cabo, muy amiga. Ya se había olvidado de ella al echarse novio, pero los que leyeron el diario de mi hermana ya conocen bien esa bochornosa historia. Sin embargo, mejor que me calle sobre eso por ahora. Ya vino Miguel, acompañado por su madre. Y qué raro: la señora Angustias se encerró con mi mamá en la pieza de mi abuela. ¿Por qué será? ¿Por qué tanto misterio?
Dictionary and grammar:
CONTENTO = GLAD
ESCUELA = SCHOOL
PASAR POR ALTO is a Spanish verbal phrase that means to ignore, to miss, to neglect, to skip and similar. In this specific case it exactly means to skip. PASARÍAMOS is the verb conjugated in the conditional tense (present, first plural person).
ECHARSE NOVIO/A is another Spanish verbal phrase that means to get a fiancée, boyfriend (NOVIO) or girlfriend (NOVIA). The verb is used in its reflexive form (ECHARSE), as the infinitive ECHAR has a completely different meaning: TO THROW.
OLVIDAR/OLVIDARSE (DE, reflexive in this latter case) = TO FORGET. When we don't use the reflexive form, we must complete the verb with the direct object expressed with the pronouns LO, LA, LOS, LAS (ex.: OLVIDARLO).
BOCHORNOSO/A = EMBARASSING
HISTORIA = HISTORY
MISTERIO = MYSTERY

Hello, my beloved friends, today I'm very glad because my best friend and classmate Miguel is coming to my house. We are going to do our school homework together. There aren't many occasions when I'm allowed to invite friends, because we hardly ever have enough food to offer them. That's why my parents and grandmother never invite anyone to come. Otherwise, we would skip dinner. By her side, my sister doesn't have friends close enough to invite to come. Her best friends are in Córdoba, where she left them when we moved to Buenos Aires. Or rather, her best friend was not, after all, a very good friend. She had already forgotten her when she got a boyfriend, but those who read my sister's diary already know that embarrassing story. However, I'd better keep quiet about that for just now. Miguel is already here, accompanied by his mother. And what a curiosity: Mrs. Angustias locked herself with my mother in my grandmother's room.
