Entertainment Blog #162 | Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark [2019] - Written Words are About to Come True...
We love to hear stories. In our childhood, we love to hear fairy tales from our adults. When we become teenagers, things we like change. Usually teenagers like categories like romance, adventure..and also horror. Talking about horror stories, most of them have background stories. God knows whether it is right or wrong. Maybe it is just a made-up horror story. Or maybe it is a written curse.
"Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" is a 2019 supernatural horror film directed by André Øvredal. It is based on the popular children's book series of the same name written by Alvin Schwartz. The screenplay was adapted by The Hageman Brothers, Guillermo del Toro. The film is set in a late '60s environment which I really like.
Set in the fictional town of Mill Valley on Halloween night in 1968, the film follows three teenagers - Stella, Auggie, and Chuck. They cross paths with a local bully, Tommy Milner, and take shelter with a young drifter named Ramón Morales. The group decides to visit the supposedly haunted Bellows family mansion. Inside, they discover a hidden room containing a mysterious book of horror stories written by Sarah Bellows, a young girl accused of witchcraft.
Stella decided to bring a book home. After taking the book home, strange and terrifying events begin to unfold. The stories in the book start to come to life, I mean, the book starts to write itself. It's not just stories. Those stories contain the way the ones who entered the Bellows mansion on Halloween. These incidents cause fear and chaos among the group.
The first to go missing was Tommy Milner. After understanding the depth of evil in this book, Stella, Auggie, and Chuck with Ramon start to find a solution for this curse. Will they be able to do it before getting another one killed?? It's up to you to find out.
"Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" provides horror fans a chilling and suspenseful experience. The film effectively combines elements of supernatural horror with a period setting, capturing the essence of the 1960s. It is a dreamy and creepy journey into a world where the written word has the power to bring nightmares to life.
The film excels in delivering well-crafted scares, including unique sequences featuring the monsters from the stories. It also explores themes of friendship, bravery, and the consequences of ruthlessness. The characters' struggles and growth throughout the film add depth to the horror narrative.
The film received generally positive reviews from critics. It was praised for its faithful adaptation of the source material, effectively recreating the creepy and unsettling atmosphere of the original books. Critics commended the film's ability to cater to younger horror enthusiasts while still offering a thrilling experience for a broader audience.
"Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" performed well at the box office. It had a solid opening weekend and maintained audience interest in the weeks that followed. It grossed $68.9 million in the United States and Canada and an additional $35.6 million in other territories, resulting in a worldwide total of $104.5 million. That's an impressive Box Office against a budget of 30$ Million.
"Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" successfully interprets the creepy and unsettling tales from the beloved book series onto the big screen. It offers a spine-tingling experience, with well-executed scares and a captivating narrative. The film pays tribute to the source material while crafting a memorable horror story.
