IN THE LINE OF FIRE (1993) - 31 years ago, Eastwood was still Old.
It's pretty wild to wrap my head around the fact that Clint Eastwood was already doing the "I'm too old for this" thing back in the early '90s. I mean, "In the Line of Fire" and "Unforgiven" just a year earlier—30 years ago! And here he is, still kicking it. 90 years old, still making movies. What a legend.
So, "In the Line of Fire" is this solid '90s cat-and-mouse thriller, directed by the late Wolfgang Petersen. Clint Eastwood does his thing with a badass yet nuanced performance, and you've got John Malkovich bringing in a wonderfully entertaining villain vibe. Petersen's dependable craftsmanship is all over it, serving up lots of thrills and some seriously quotable one-liners. Nothing here screams "masterpiece," but honestly, "In the Line of Fire" gives you everything you'd want from this kind of movie.
Eastwood is still old in 1993. He's not Dirty Harry anymore. Hard to connect with the depressed Guilty ridden old cop. So, even the 2 hours feel too freaking long. Rene Russo is hot, but acting is thumbs down. Malkovich is terrifying. Very effective Tense thriller for whenever Eastwood isn't talking.
It's that perfect mix of action, intrigue, and Eastwood doing his grizzled hero thing. Just a classic '90s thriller hitting all the right spots, except the romance which feels far fetched.
