How Many Langauges Do You know ? | 5% SL Charity

Today I thought of sharing my experience about learning langauges. As srilankans we use three main langauges. Sinhala , Tamil and English. Not everyone is fluent in all 3 langauges even we learn all 3 langauges at school. Sometimes someone may think that learning 3 langauges is not much necessary,but If you can practice few langauges it will give you lots of benifits.

Benifits of learning few langauges

When you learn few langauges your brain becomes more active. It's like you become a multi tasker. You improves your reading , writing, listening and speaking abilities in particular language . It needs lots of brain functions . This improves your memory as well.
When you learn a language you learn about culture as well. So you can widen your knowledge on different cultures of the world. Learning few langauges also improves your confidence.

Langauges I learn
I learned sinhala as my first national langauge. In school I learned english and tamil. As I recived English medium education till O/Ls I received a better opportunity to improve my English knowledge. As sinhala is my mother tounge naturally I became fluent in it.
I like to learn English since my childhood. I did reading and watching english movies to improve my knowledge. I finished an English diploma with my Advanced levels.
Now also I study English to become a teacher. Even I use english a lot I feels I need to do more improvements in my speaking and writing. As english is not our first national langauge it's rarely used in day today life. So it's a challenge to improve and maintain English knowledge.
Texting and speaking with friends in English helps me a lot to maintain my english knowledge.

My tamil knowledge is not soo good, but I'm studying it as a part of my diploma. I have the basic knowledge of tamil. It should be developed more. I wanted to learn korean or Japanese from a long time.Recently I started learning korean language . Actually It's a challenge for me. Korean language is bit difficult to pronounce. It's alphabet is easy to learn. Korean grammer rules are complex. Learning foreign language is a challenge when we don't have much exposure to it.
I wish to learn Japanese in future if I successfully finish learning korean. Japanese and Chinese language have similarities with korean. So it won't be much difficult.

Sometimes you learn langauges because of your interest. Sometimes because you have to learn it due to what kind of a reason. However learning few langauges is an extra skill for you that will bring lots of benifits.

You can spend your free time meaningfully by learning a new language. It will be useful for you one day. Specially this lockdown season let us learn and try new things.
