Indoor Musical show Experience: Pahan Tharuwa
Normally, there are 5 or 6 indoor musical shows held at Peradeniya University in a year. Many faculties organize musical shows to give scholarships to students in their faculties who have poor economic conditions. Pahantharuwa is one of the indoor shows organized by the medical faculty of University of Peradeniya. This is an annual event of this faculty.
The shows are different faculty wise because they maintain a special kind of taste in their faculty. A lower rhythm is maintained in Pahan tharuwa. That is its identity. The artists who participated this time were TM Jayarathna, Edwad Jayakodi and Nirosha. So can you imaging the combination of these three? Yeah…It is true, all songs touched at the deep of our heart and one who closes eyes, opens them at the end of the show.
Normally, University students are stressed with problems. They are away from their families and many students belong to low or middle-income families. Not like Colombo, Kalani and Japura universities, part time jobs are rare in Kandy area. And low capability to do part time jobs for Peradeniya student, specially girls. And the academic stress is high specially who follow a clinical base course. This kind of event helps to forget their problems for a while and relax their mind from stressed thoughts.

The show continued for about four hours. Can you imagine how amazing that time was. Can you imagine how peaceful that environment was when TM sang Sithin Maa Nosali Hididhdhi. Can you hear the background music...(violin part) Can you hear Nirosha’s voice singing punsadha rata avidin...(නිල් තරු රෑන ඉඟි බිඟි පාන අහස යට... පිල් කඩ උඩම ඇලවී ඉන්න හිතයි මට...මී අඹ කන්න ගිරවුනි එන්න එපා හෙට...මල් පිපුනාට ගෙඩි නෑ තාම අඹ ගහට...) What a marvelous time truly it was? Can you imagine the calm voice of Edward Jayakodi. How sweet it was when he shared his past memories and the background stories of songs. There were over 7000 people in the auditorium. Every single bit of the space was occupied by them but you couldn’t hear any other sound except the music and couldn’t even feel the person next to you. Words cannot explain what a soothing moment it was.
A student ticket
The price of a ticket for a university student was Rs.100/-. Can you ever imagine gaining such a wonderful top class indoor show experience for just a 100 rupee note? It’s truly a rare opportunity which you will get as a student of UOP. However, the worst part is that the space of the GYM was not enough for the crowd. Peradeniya campus does not have an auditorium that all the students can gather at one time. There are more than 12000 students in Peradeniya but actually there is no spacious auditorium for at least 3000 students to gather at the same time. So, we usually organize shows in the University GYM which is obviously not an auditorium, and the sound balancing there is really challengeable and the maximum student tickets allowed is 4500. Because of this, many students have loss the chance of participating to a show as a student.
Normally, 1st years take the chance of watching the shows by student tickets. When we go to 3rd or 4th years, many of us miss the chance of watching shows because of our busy academic schedules or we prefer buying tickets for Rs.500/-. However, to be honest 1st years gain the maximum entertainment by watching shows as batches, which was same in my case as well. I still remember the most funniest incidents we had to face during our 1st year while watching these shows. But,I hope it would be much better you experiencing it rather listening to my stories which would also make this article much more lengthier.
It's a beautiful one. Um waiting to be a one in the crowd one day.
