Flood, Rain Water Disposal & Roads

in Steem Sri Lanka3 years ago (edited)

Once upon a time, days after rainy days were bored & bitter days for us (inmates of our office) due to surface water flew into the office building.

During rainy season, most proberbly on Monday mornings, we had to face many difficulties due to flood all over each & every Section of Ground Floor. Rain water had been collected while raining throughout the weekend.

Some files which were packed in the bottom shelves of file coupboards & racks which were closer to the terraso floor were completely wet.Hence, prior to commence our day to day work we had to drain out water which collected inside & to get dry all wetted files & other utilities. We had to dedicate whole morning & it was useless effort.😥

Later we were used to place some sand bags at the front door step to cover up & block the entrance as a simple coffer dam to avoid the flooding condition.

As well as a rain water disposal system was introduced to office premises including underground hume pipe lines inter-connected to 7-8 manholes, built-up surface drains & dish drains. At last rain water flow had been turned out to "Van Ela" which flows behind the office premises. So, we were able to overcome our burning problem successfully.

Then our Top Management decided to asphalt concrete ("Carpet") our existing internal tarred roads.A contract has been called & awarded. It could be called a single tender from PRDA which is a Semi-government Organization. But they did it through a Sub Contractor.

At first they sprayed tack coat (tar liquid) over existing tar road.

Then laid Asphalt by using Asphalt Layer by maintaining slopes & compacted by Rollers.

Whether coat (finishing coat) of asphalt layer had been carried out on Vesak Poya Day by the Sub Contractor.I also had to attend. We requested PRDA arranged camfers of road surfaces towards our existing manholes not to disturb rain water flow as per our request.

After ten days, few PRDA officers came to our office again to get asphalt samples to check their work done. They cut / drilled three circular pits of diameter at about 3" & depth approximately 6" by using a "Core Cutter". Aparently it was easy to cut an asphalt road.😁

Then extracted cylindrical asphalt samples which were cut & drilled by using a special wrench easily.

Those samples will be checked at their own laboratory. If Asphalting has been done correctly to required thickness & used specified tar quantity, they will pay Sub Contractor's payment.
We have to arrange PRDA payment.😊

Thanks for reading this.
