SEC-S15W2 | “Beware of Bullying”

Compliments of the season to friends of the Indonesian community. It is week 2 of the engagement challenge and I'm happy to share ideas about the topic for this week's discussion.

The topic for discussion this week is “Beware of Bullying”. My discussion will focus on the guiding questions below, and I hope you all find pleasure in reading through them.

During your life, have you ever received bullying? If so, in what form? physical, verbal or through cyberbullying. Provide your review.

Bullying from my understanding is when someone portrays an aggressive character towards others with the intention of dominating others.

Bullying can be practised by an individual or a group of people, and it's common in schools and the workplace. That said, I have been a victim of cyberbullying and verbal bullying on several occasions.

When I was a kid, I was constantly bullied verbally by my so-called uncles and aunts. Also in school by my teacher especially when I was in 7th grade.

While at the university, I faced cyberbullying on Facebook because no one guided me on how to use my Facebook. I created my Facebook account by myself and while in the process of exploring it, I was bullied.

How do you equip your children to avoid bullying either at school or in their social environment.?

The first thing I do is to educate them and let them know what bullying is all about. This way they can identify when they are bullied or also help educate others about bullying.

I open up a friendly conversation with my kids especially when they return back from school. In the process of the friendly conversation, if they were bullied, I quickly noticed it and looked for a way forward.

I equally build my children’s self-confidence by making them listen to online classes about social behaviours. I constantly followed them up and also downloaded videos which we watched together.

Lastly, I always get involved with my daughter who is fun of exploring the internet to make sure of what she watches online. I cautioned her of the difference between children's content online and adult’s content.

Give your opinion on how to overcome bullying in the form of physical, verbal or through cyberbullying.

As I earlier said, the first way to overcome bullying is by building your self-confidence. Be confident in yourself and do not accept defeat. When you are being bullied, if you do not have confidence in yourself, you will suffer immensely from depression.

With regard to verbal bullying, the best way I do is to walk away when someone starts bullying me with words. I walk away not accepting defeat but just a mature way of allowing the perpetrator to become a fool to themselves.

When it comes to Cyberbullying, I seek help from someone I know is more knowledgeable than I do. This way, I will not become a victim again.
