15 million persons of all ages are affected by asthma in the United States. This represents a 61% increase over the last 15 years with a 45% increase in mortality during the last decade. Women are affected more than men, accounting for about 60% of the nearly 18 million cases of adult asthma. Hormones are thought to be a possible cause for this increase in incidence in women. - ABG's ( Arterial blood gases)
- Sputum analysis
In physiotherapy, we perform some special tests to confirm the diagnosis. The first one is the spirometer which measure the lung function and obstruction, questionnaires that evaluates and assess the impact of asthma on quality of life.
Physical Therapy Intervention for Asthma
Physical therapy intervention for asthma is the chest physiotherapy (CPT)are from weeks to months to regain normal lung function and subsides the symptoms. Here are the few exercises videos that you have to perform to treat asthma patients. Treatment protocol vary from patient to patient. But the main thing is you have to evaluate the exact cause of asthma or it's trigger factor that aggravate the symptoms.
Box breathing
This the exercise to reduce stress, control emotions and improve mood. In asthma relaxation exercises play important role to improve lung function as most of the asthma trigger with stress or anxiety.
Pursed lip breathing exercise
This exercise is perform to improve lung function, exhale residual air from lungs, strengthen chest muscles, improve chest rise and fall. This is done to improve dyspnea or shortness of breath.
Diaphragmatic Breathing Exercise
Improve lung expansion, posture, enhance core stability, reduced breathing effort, stress and relaxation. Improve sleep pattern, and athletic performance.
Chest Stretches
Chest Stretches are to improve chest muscles as chest muscles shortened due to weakness. Chest stretches are important to lengthen chest muscles and strengthen back muscles.
5 to 10 minutes heat up before exercise is necessary as muscles relax after heating then you can perform exercise easily. Also do soft tissue mobilization before performing these exercises to reduce pain. Perform 5, 5 repetitions on first week then increase accordingly. These are the exercises for beginners as other exercises can by performed by professionals and experienced physiotherapist or gym trainer.
