Debate (no.30): Physical Book versus E-book
I'm glad to be part of this contest, all thanks to the organizer. By way of introduction physical books are the hard copy book which is touchable and feelable while E-books are electronic books also known as soft copy which are untouchable.
When it comes to choosing a book format, I always prefer a physical book because I have it handy and, more, it's quite comfortable and easily accessible than an e-book, because sometimes, when you don't have data, there are some books that you cannot open or access its content without data and also there are some books you purchase and when you're trying to open the book it will be giving you issues and sometimes some chapters are omitted, with all of these issues I prefer physical book to an e-book.
My best format is physical books because it helps me to engage in an active reading process instead of a passive reading process. When I'm using a physical book, it helps me to pay more attention to every detail of the book. If I'm solving mathematics, for example, I love using a pencil for solving the example inside the book, if the book is mine, this is one of the things I cannot do with soft copy materials. Physical books help me to retain and remember the important point I highlighted in the book and I can visualize the point also, because the brain tends to retain pictures better, like the color of the highlighter used. Research has also shown that people that use physical books tend to retain more information than people that are using any other form or format.
1. Better retention: people that use physical books retain more than e-books users.
2. No distraction: physical books have zero distraction, especially in a serene environment.
1. Static format: the format of physical book after production remains the same, the font size, and the font character. Unlike e-books, in which things can be changed to match individuals taste.
2. Physical books are cumbersome, most of the time it is hard to carry around.
1. Very portable: E-books are very portable and compressed. A large volume of books can be compressed into a smaller unit or volume.
2. Availability: E-Books are always available, especially when stored online. You can easily log in and get the needed materials.
Distraction: E-books are very distracting. Once the data is on, notifications keep flooding him, which causes a lot of distractions.
Eye impairment: Too much reading on the screen causes eye strain which leads to other complications like color blindness and the rest.
It is an undebatable fact that books reduce distraction much more than e-book because one can choose to off his or phone during read if he/she has a physical book to avoid calls and notifications, but a person that have the book on the phone will not be able to do that. Sometime when reading or studying a material on the phone, there is always a serious urge to check one thing or the other which is hardly seen when you use a physical book.
When it has to do with environmental impact, e-books are generally considered eco-friendly for the following reasons: Firstly, E-books are stored digitally and then there is no need for physical storage. Secondly, e-books do not require paper and other materials and this helps in reducing waste generation.
I would love to invite @roselove, @hahdie and @databae to join in this contest.
