IS HOME WORK NECESSARY FOR LEARNING? |

Do you think homework helps you remember what you learned in school?
My Thought about Homework |
---|
Recalling what you have learned in school it is often so hard in Bangladesh. It’s doubly true when you’re trying to learn too much in a short amount of time. Homework can help with this. Let’s take an example: If we don’t understand a math problem or a science rule in class. Doing it at home helps us understand it better. Working with homework is very important in our education, because it helps us practice on our own.
Sometimes the way homework is given may not be the best way. In Bangladesh the homework is usually only to prepare for the exams. For this reason, students try to memorize things rather than actually understanding them. Over time this can actually reduce the quality of learning. Homework encouraged more analysis would help the students.
A further advantage to schools in Bangladesh reducing homework and teaching in more depth would increase learning. By doing this students could wok well in the exams and also use the knowledge for their practical lives.
How do you feel when you have a lot of homework?
I am not a academic student now and I will tell you about homework according to my experience. Homework is a heavy burden for majority students in Bangladesh. There is coaching, tuition, school assignments, and homework in high school and college. This takes up the entire day. Between all these things you always feel like nothing is finished. Coming home from school, going to coaching, then sitting doing homework at night, it was often so hard to finish it all. This constant load makes it hard to focus.
It’s not just mentally exhausting; it is physically exhausting. It is often the case that students won’t have enough time to play or exercise, therefore, harming their health. When students don’t get enough sleep and stay up late finishing homework, that is worse. All of this stress compounding to make our students’ lives more difficult.
In this education system here, with homework, coaching and with school, students can become mentally tired of it. It can result in a lack of interest to study. They then focus on preparation for exams and not real learning.
Can you think of ways homework could be made more useful or enjoyable?
When Homework are Enjoyable |
---|
It would help the student in Bangladesh if homework in Bangladesh was more effective and more enjoyable. Give less homework of better quality would be first. Students can do better in concentrating under less pressure. For instance, if the teachers assigned the lighter tasks then the students will have enough time to study in peace.
It would also be useful to add some creativity and analysis to homework. In most schools, homework mostly prepares kids for exams, but if homework were to instruct students to think more, they would learn more. Say, we could have students choose a topic for project based assignments. For example a pollution or a social issue based project in Bangladesh could engage the students with complete focus.
Students also benefit from giving group homework because they can collaborate with their classmates to throw out ideas. It builds friendships, it helps learn. Students can learn about other students mistakes, and improve understanding of the topics.
Teachers will give feedback about homework. However when teachers review each assignment and provide suggestions to students, they see the mistakes and they learn from it. Then they notice that studies are not only something for an exam, but some real knowledge.
If homework were adjusted in quantity and quality and was matched to students’ creativity. Then it would surprisingly feel like a useful learning.
