Welcome to Steem Pacific Community!

The Pacific Islands region are one of the last frontiers for the reach of digital technologies. But only in the last decade, deregulation and reform in the telecommunication sector fueled a boom in mobile phones, lower internet prices, greater network coverage and access quality and technology causing a wave of digital transformation. My country Papua New Guinea has seen this dramatic change as there is a growing "digital generation" as described by Australia's Lowy Institute in this article https://www.lowyinstitute.org/publications/digital-islands-how-pacific-ict-revolution-transforming-region on how the ICT revolution is transforming the Pacific.

I was one of those early bloggers in Papua New Guinea. I joined Facebook in 2009 when only 40,000 (.005%) of its 7 million people had internet access. Today, over 1.1 million people (12%) of our 9 million are on the internet. Facebook is the most common social media platform with 937,000 users. https://napoleoncat.com/stats/facebook-users-in-papua_new_guinea/2021/01.

Today, we have many Papua New Guinean bloggers who produce great content. I've seen users and groups on Facebook creating a big following in interests such as comedy, music, politics, lifestyle, small business promotion, trending news, online activism, etc. Imagine all these content we create and Facebook getting all our data into its database and increasing their value without rewarding the content creators! If I post these content on my personal blog/website under my own domain name, I add value to my site.

Had my share of disappointment with personal blog/website. I had this experience where in 2016 and 2017, I moved from the city to my home village that didn't have mobile phone coverage nor internet access. It's like getting out of civilization kind of thing. I forgot to renew three (3) of my sites - two niche affiliate sites and one a personal blog - and I lost 7 years of work and content. It was a big blow for me, as I was making an average of $200 per month from Amazon from the two affiliate sites. By the way, $200 is K700 PNG Kina, lots of money for a villager!

I'm fascinated by technology. So when I came across an advertisement on Entrepreneur.com about a social media site using blockchain technology and that you are rewarded for creating value through content, I signed up immediately, of course after a "steemit scam" "steem scam" due diligence check. Most of the negative experiences and pessimism shared were by early users and the site has matured so I dived in.

Steemit rewards users in cryptocurrency - which is the future of the digital economy - for sharing our voice and for the value through content we produce. I won't lose my content when I'm out of digital civilization again. I'm fascinated by the blockchain technology and the cryptocurrencies world.

If you're a Papua New Guinean or Pacific Islander reading this, get on board Steemit.com. And join #steempacific community. Share your unique voice and get rewarded.

Remember: the future is digital. Who would have thought the price of Bitcoin would be $47,000 today? And there are altcoins like Steem and Tron that has the potential to increase in value like Bitcoin. Here at #steemit, the content we create earns us both.

Cheers! @kezws
