How To Settle on Campus
Hello there:)
Welcome to my blog and big congratulations on your admission! If you're reading this, I'm guessing you're here to support my blog or probably, you're having issues putting yourself together for the first weeks of your fresher days. Well, you came to the right place :)
Trust me, I know being a fresher in college is never easy.
It's usually a big step for everyone and that's because you have a lot on your mind or it's that anxiety.
Leaving the comfort of your beautiful home into a much larger environment filled with new faces could be frustrating and scary.
So, I thought since I've been there I could write up some tips for you guys. Hope it's helpful.
What to pack up?
Before travelling, you should pack up a lot of good clothes: Well, since you're new, you may get shy and all.. wearing good clothes pushes up that confidence level to relate with people and that's one of the things you need. School documents: there's always a list of documents to bring along on the school website. Plenty passports because you would be doing a lot of registrations. Some foods stuff and you could buy the rest of the things you need when you get there: you don't want to be paying for extra luggage, a laptop and a phone. You could add some other stuff to the list but these are the essentials you should take from home.
Accommodation
First things first, since your college is far from home you need to get a temporary apartment and there are some essential things to consider when doing this. The proximity to your department and to the market (this is very important), the nature of security in that environment. Definitely, the price and finally, the condition of electricity and water in the apartment.
These are the basics you should consider before paying that rent. I would advise that once you get to the school, you should lodge a hotel room, then take a walk round the campus so you know where everything is before even seeking for accommodation.
Get on social Media
It's vital to have at least an Android phone as a fresher. Once you have that, you need to search for your departmental groups on WhatsApp, telegram or even Facebook. This would help you to get to know some colleagues before you even meet them and most especially, it would give you information on timetables from your class rep and some necessary processes, probably registrations you need to partake in to be enrolled as a student. So, make a WhatsApp account or whatever and get connected.
Try to prep a bit before a class
You don't necessarily have to read up everything because some of it never really makes sense until the lecturer explains it. But Atleast, you should try to get conversant with the topic of the day so you don't get lost in class. This is very helpful to boost your confidence in class and give you the push to achieve more that day. Lack of understanding in classes brings a lot of frustration and initiates lots of students to give up on that course or on school entirely.
Make New Friends
It's very difficult to meet new people and a lot of students may get scared that they won't make any friends and end up being lonely. It's very understandable cause man is a social animal and no man is an island. In numerous ways, you need help from your colleagues.
Try to be welcoming to people and say "hello" or "how far?" to people you would like to connect with. It may be difficult but you have to understand that everyone at that point is trying to make friends and find people that may have things in common with them. So, be yourself and get out there.
Also, you should know that the people you meet may end up being best friends with you till you get old. Try to make good friends that are ready to study.
Manage your cash
Freshers make a lot of mistakes in their spending.
Sometimes, leaving home, there's a tendency you may me lured to try out some activities you never had the opportunity to experience. They may be quite expensive and repetition of these events may leave you broke and in debt. Try to avoid all these. They are no good.
Once you understand how daily school activities look like, you should try to plan a budget that suits your up keep cash.
Also, cut out some quality time to take yourself out have fun with friends, probably a nice meal in a restaurant. So to protect your mental health due to all the stress from school.
In preparation for exams
Always attend classes, try not to miss any except in ill conditions. Take notes in all classes. Try to ask colleagues that seem to understand to explain to you after the class, where you get confused(this is something I've been using in school, helps a lot)
Finally, when it's exams period... make sure to get yourself into a study group. This would help you share ideas and give you the morale so you won't get bored and sleep off.
Remember to ask questions when you're confused
Like I said "No man is an island".
Well, these are the few tips I have for you.. there are a lot more but I was planning to make this short. Hope you enjoyed yourself and I wish you the best of lucks in your college.
