Campus Connect week 6- My first day on campus

in CampusConnect3 years ago

My first day on campus was a moment filled with mixed emotions and certain expectations. You see i come from a small town in the eastern part of Nigeria “Aba”. Its a commercial city but not too developed unlike most popular cities well at least until recently. Anyways i always wanted more than just here and decided to explore futher to other well known places like LAGOS, hence i chose to go to university in lagos. Suprisingly my dad even brought it up before i told him my decision, so i had no problem with that.
I got into the University of Lagos (akoka) through diploma classes so i guess my topic today is going to focus on my first day on campus during my foundation classes.

You see, a month earlier ,i had passed my entrance exam and was very excited to be going to lagos. I was already on some group chats for foundation students where i made friends, im a pretty fun guy to talk with on phone and group chats especially.

When i got to lagos, i was told i wont be staying in the school hostel but would be coming from home to school. My sister lived in lagos so i was staying with her. She lived at Victoria island and that’s pretty far from the mainland where my school was located. So my sister taught me where to get public transports so transportation would be cheaper for me since she couldn’t drop me off everyday at school due to the nature of her work.

Finally on the 26th of September 2019. I walked into the campus, it had this nice scerene environment. I had issues locating my class but i did it anyways. We didn’t have much lectures on that day except for a few lecturers who introduced themselves and what their class was about. Meanwhile as a sharp guy, i was scouting the pretty girls in the class . “Time to make friends”,i thought 😂. I met some on the group chat and so while having lectures, we were already chatting on phone asking each other if they were in class and where they were seated and thats how i met “Anita”. My first female friend on campus, and she fineeee.... the curves complimented, the back the front,”complete” and she’s smart, she acts like a baby sometimes but overall she was perfect, i still talk with her till today.

After classes we talked and from talking with her i met other friends and thats how i started my crew. We were big but they were all nice. Oh there was this other girl i fell heads of heels for, we ended up become really close but she left the school for a private institution, her name was “Kimberly onyinye” ah when i posted her pictures there was no guy that didn’t ask for her number, shes fine, shes hot, get sense but again a baby😂. Yup we got along pretty fine , i only wish i asked her out before someone else did while she was at her new school. That lucky bastard. My clique also had other boys too and girls, “dj rex, muhis, leke, folarin, praise, tasha, bisola, hope etc

After school that day, we explored the campus and toured the lagoon front, the park and our regular spot, sports center. I had this nice spaghetti and turkey from a popular spaghetti spot close by and it was like 700 naira. I bought with my friends and we at at sports center before finding our way home.

You see going home now was another issue. While others stayed in their hostels and near by houses, i would have to go a long journey to Victoria island alone. Unlike most universities in nigeria ridden by student cultisim, unilag had gotten rid of that problem with special forces called “alpha base”, so you could get arrested and expelled if caught and still serve your jail time. Yup it was that strict, i guess this made everyone calm down and i was aware of this fact but I couldn’t forsee what went on outside campus😂😂

I had my earpiece on playing my music, if i could remember correctly i wore a yellow shirt and black shorts with yellow designs. You see, in other universities with cultists you wouldn’t wear that but hey i knew what i signed up for and unilag was free. I followed the market route which was a short cut to the bus station, of course this was outside campus. I walked on and heard someone hissing behind but just ignored the sound, i never turn back if im not called by my name its just how i operate.

I crossed the road to the park and waited a bus. It was kinda deserted here now but i wasn’t expecting anything to happen. So a guy crosses the street and meets me and says
“ i dey call you and you dey walka oya identify yourself”
Omo it took me a second then I understood what was going on. So i decided not to play along cause a wrong answer or fake claiming could put you into alotta trouble.
I told him I didn’t know what he was talking about.
“My boss dey call you he say make you come”
Omo ahh which boss😂 that was what was going through my mind, i looked across the road and saw another man cross over, when i say he was scary looking, i mean im taller than him but this was a pure tout, he had tattoos all over his face and hands with dread locks, scary scars and he was just rugged looking. My heart dropped into my tummy ahh this is how lagos did me welcome 🙏

To cut the story short, the man gave a few threats and capped a little , at this point its not like i could run. Never try running in lagos especially close to a market cause once they shout OLE (thief) everything is over for you😂 so i stood still and asked what they wanted cause i needed to leave.

He looked at me and said i must do orientation for flying colors. At the end of the day, i just lost my phone and went home pissed. My sister laughed at me so hard when she got back but said I did the right thing. I mean i felt like i should have fought back in a way cause omo i was ashamed. I felt as though i just put my pride inside dustbin. but cmon i was pretty sure that dude had weapons and he already threatened to kill me if i try nonsense cause he knows where I follow to go home.🤝 i was given another smaller phone to manage and i let my friends at school know what had happened in which everyone laughed. They nicknamed my new phone water phone cause it was as small as those water phone toys we played with as kids. Eventually i got an iphone though and my crew lost their phones one by one 😂 on different days. I guess at the end of the day i had the last laugh.

That pretty much sums my first day on campus, it had its ups and downs but it was a very pleasant and unpleasant experience which I’d cherish in my memories 😂. Our crew broke up and i made a new crew at the end, one with lots of nerds. We all made high grades at the end of the day and got admitted into our BA program’s.

What a wonderful and entertaining experience, the friends, the school and the unfortunate experience that lead to the loss of your mobile phone.
