Winning the MTN Football Scholar Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award is the best thing that has happened to me. Friday 31st July 2015, whether by design or creation shall always be evergreen in my life. It was a red letter day.

On that day, I woke up tired and exhausted. I had been doubling up preparing for my exams and also attending the University school team football screening for a match against the national MTN side. Four players were to be selected from each faculty. Somehow I was among the selected four. It was surprising considering the fact that I am a first year. But I was determined to repay the faith they had in me.
The screening had a lot of people in attendance. It turned out it was an open screening and there was a large number of people in attendance.

I had made the screening for the match but there was a problem. I had an exam on the same day and almost the same time. I was sad considering the fact that I had worked so hard to be in that team.

I was livid but I had to write my exams. That was the reason I was in school. My motto had always been 'books and boots'. Noticed the books came first? Yeah. I am a student before an athlete.

At the exam hall, there were no surprises. I saw most of the things I read. I finished in 45 minutes an exam that was slated for 3 hours. I remember the invigilator giving me the 'this coconut head don agree to come back next year' look. Lol.

After the exams I rushed to the stadium. 20 minutes out you could hear the blaring of music. It was a fun fare. I met my friends who was waiting for me with my kit bag. They had everything I needed for the katch. The match had already started and jerseys shared. The boys were leading us by 3 goals to nil. I saw a lot of people who didn't make the screening on the pitch. But I wasn't surprised, I was a first year student and matches like these were always played by the final years.
I was introduced 10 minutes before half time. Second half began and we entered into the pitch. We pulled one back and it ended 3-1.
At the end of the match there was a music performance by Inyanya and they gave award for the Most Valuable Player. Guess who won? Yours sincerely. The guy who hurried his exams and played just 45 minutes of the game.

I was happy. I felt proud. And no it wasn't totally about the money. It was the recognition, the clearing the doubts in the hearts of people who felt a first year shouldn't be playing a match meant for finalists. Seeing my guys at the stands smiling and laughing and jubilating wholeheartedly for me. It was so beautiful.

Happiness, success, wins are relative. The best thing that has happened to you could be your cripple friend walking up a flight. The best thing that has happened to you could be you surviving an accident. The best thing that has happened to you could be you getting your crush to talk to you. The best thing that could happen to you could be you overcoming that fear, leaving that habit, beating that obsession. You decide what is the best thing to happen to you. What you see as a win is a win. No matter how shallow it is to the next person it is your choice and as such is valid.

I am greatful @Pricelesspresh for this contest. It has reminded me of how much I was invested in football and the kind of sacrifices I made to be noticed . It has reminded me of the kind of friends I have. Friends who stick like family.
