INTRODUCTION

Hello fellow steemians, its another beautiful opportunity to make a post on this great community. Steemit has been an educative platform for me. i have learnt so much in this platform and i am still learning.

Very quickly, i will like to talk about one of the fruits we are all familiar with. Mango is seasonal and in the part of the world where i come , it is the season of mango. when you know the benefit of a certain food or fruits , you will have no choice but to appreciate it

In this article, i will also like to talk about the benefits of the various parts of mango.

MANGO

Mango is an edible fruit produced by the tree of mangifera indica ( mangifera indica is also known as mango). India is the world largest producer of mango , seconded by indonesia .
Mango has various colours, sizes, shapes , and sweetness when it comes to taste. Their skin colours can be red, green , orange or light yellow with yellow inner flesh. they are made up of 84% water, 15% carbohydrate and 1% protein.\

TYPES OF MANGO

There are several types of mango fruits , but in this article we consider six most common types.

1- Tommy Atkins : it is usually dark red in colour , mostly grown in Brazil, Mexico , and also Ecuador

2- Kent: The shape is oval, its dark green in colour with dark red blush on a small side and it smells like peach fruit. It is mostly grown in Florida.

3- Keitt: it is usually large in size. they are green in colour when ripe , their seed is thin. the flesh have a sharp pungent citrus flavor with a sweet taste.

4- Haden: it oval in shape, with red skin that has both green and yellow shade. The green part turns yellow when its ripe. the flesh is firm because of its fine fibre. it has a sweet and sour flavour and aftertaste that is slightly bitter.

5- Francis: it has the shape of kidney, light green but a bit yellow when ripe with orange colour flesh. it is fruitty and juicy. it is mostly grown in Haiti.

6- Honey: They are small in size, when ripe they turn yellow . They have a sweet and sour taste with a peachy flavour. they are yellow in colour when peeled

CHEMICAL COMPONENT OF MANGO

The chemical components of mango fruit are divided into

1)Macronutrient
2)Micronutrient
3)Phytochemical

  • Macronutrients are carbohydrate, protein, amino acid, lipids andfatty acid ,and organic acids
  • Micronutrients are Minerals and vitamins
  • Phytochemicals are Phenolic, polyphenol, pigments and volatile constituents

in this article, we will carefully consider some few components;

Macronutrients

  • Organic acids: malic and citric acids are the most important organic acid in mango. They bring about the fruit acidity, fruit quality and organoleptic properties ( organoleptic property means sense of taste, smell, sight and touch) .

  • Carbohydrate: The major source of carbohydrates like sugar, pectin and starch are found in ripened mango fruit. it contains about 15% of sugar.

  • protein : mango is low in protein

  • Lipid and fatty acid : They are small in quantity at the pulp of mango fruit. the seed and the peel are the source of fatty acid in mango which can be used in pharmaceutical and food industries. Mango seed fat is consider to be cocoa butter alternative because it is rich in 1,3- distearoyl-2-oleoyl-glycerol(SOS), which is use for the production of heat-resistant hard butter.

Micronutrients

  • Vitamins: The major vitamins of mango fruit are Vitamin C and Vitamin A. vitamin C is higher in less ripe mango than in fully ripe one.

  • Minerals: the major mineral that mango pulp constitutes are potassium, phosphorous and calcium, while the seeds and the peels are high in sodium , zinc and iron.

Phytochemicals

  • Polyphenolic : The protect plant from ultra violet radiation , destruction by pathogens and reactive oxygen specie.

  • Carotenoids: This accounts for the yellow-orange colours of mango and the red colours when ripe.it is found at the chromoplast of mango.

The Peel
The Pulp
The seed Kernal

The Pulp:
It is the sweet part of mango fruit. it is actually the yellow inner flesh of the mango that is revealed when we peel it off . it can be used in preparing juice and drinks or you can consume it like that.

  • it is rich in iron , hence pregnant women and anemic patients are advised to consume it more.
  • it helps in digestion
  • it is high in Vitamin A and Vitamin E which help the hormonal system to perform very well
  • it contains selenium which help protects us against heart diseases.

The Peel: This part of the mango is most times discarded. it contains some chemicals called ethyl gallate and penta-O-galloyl-glucoside which help to inhibit the growth of tumor, protects the heart from heart diseases and also the kidney.

  • it also contains flavonoids which prevents cancer and premature aging.
  • it delays the appearance of wrinkles
  • it prevents menstrual pains
  • It helps in weight lose

The Seed:
This is mostly discarded . mango seed can be made into powder , butter or oil which are mostly how it can be used for therapeutic purpose. it is usually edible when the mango is unripe, once its riped it will become hard and can be turned into powder form.

  • mango seed butter applied on the hair can get rid of dandruff.

  • dried mango seed that is turned into powder can help cure diarrhea

  • it lowers cholesterol and helps obesed people to lose their excess weight

  • it minimizes risk of heart problem and high blood pressure

  • mango seed oil can serve as an emollient to our skin. it moistures and keeps the skin healthy. it is very good for dry skin.

  • it lowers blood sugar , hence its very good for diabetic patients

  • mango seed is rich in folic acid, calcium, vitamin A and iron which are all necessary during pregnancy

  • The presence of Vitamin A in mango seed helps to keep the eyes healthy.

However, moderate consumption of mango seed is advisable in other to avoid the risk of developing heart diseases and hypertension

BENEFITS OF MANGO FRUIT

  1. Mango contains antioxidants that is capable of fighting breast cancer, leukaemia, postrate cancer and colon cancer

  2. the presence of Vitamin C, pectin and fiber in mango help to control cholesterol level.

  3. Eating mango cleanses our body right from the inside of the body.

  4. it helps to enhance our memory and concentration

  5. It helps to make the immune system stronger.

  6. it prevents night blindness

There are other beautiful benefits of mango but this is all we can take in this article

CONCLUSION

Every part of mango is amazingly beneficial to us , hence it is important we take advantage of it.
