What is MB?

MB is the abbreviated form for Bachelor in Medicine. This is a professional exam that must be written by every 300 medical student in Nigeria so as to certify that one is fully capable of proceeding towards the clinical classes (400L and above) and becoming a future doctor.
Before the onset of the exams, a mock examination is being carried out so as to test medical students based on how prepared they are before sitting for tje main exams.

What courses are written during MB?

Well, MB comprises of a total of three (3) course. One of the course is subdivided into 3. The courses which are being tested by our lecturers in students are:

Anatomy (Gross, Embryology, Histology)
Biochemistry
Human Physiology

These courses are are usually used as the basis for setting any standard MB exam and each course in total is 100marks.

What other things are being done in MB?

Well, after those courses there are still other things which are out into consideration. Some other things which are usually done with regards to MB are:

Steeplechase
This is an aspect of the exam which involves viewing of various body cells in a slide with the use of an electronic microscope or Pictorial representation of the cells.

Alternative to practicals
This aspect of the exam is practically orientated. It has to do with carrying out of various experiments as regards to anatomy, Physiology and biochemistry.

Viva
This is also known as the oral part of MB. Here, every medical student is meant to verbally Ander questions to show that they really understood what was being taught.

How is MB graded?

For every course, there is usually a standard grade. Every course worths a total of 100 marks and these marks are partitioned into various aspects of the exam. Some marks are being dedicated to the viva, some are dedicated to alternative to practicals, some are given to Steeplechase, some are given to essays, some are given to objective questions. No matter the number of questions, everything worths a total of 100 marks per course.

There are usually three (3) grades for MB. These grades are Distinction (D), Pass (P) and Fail (F).

Distinction (70 and above)
Pass (50-69)
Fail (49 and below)

Conditions regulating MB

  1. If a student passes all the 3 courses, automatically he/she becomes a clinical medical student.

  2. If a student fails one or two courses, the person resits the exam again. If the person fails again, then he is out of Medical college.

  3. If a student fails all 3 courses, then he or she is out of medical college.

Conclusion

Medical students go through a lot in the Nigerian pattern of educational system. This is very unbearable but we try as much as to keep pushing. It'll all end in praise eventually!
