Depression among students

Depression seems to be on the increase in our society today, more especially among the youths/students in the university. Surprisingly, people are not shocked or dismayed when they hear someone committed suicide.

Apparently, we are in a world where every ill seems normal and people seem to have lost value for life.

Depression occurs when there is a wide range of emotional instability which is as a result of sadness and life full of stress. When someone dwells in a place of pain and sadness for a period of time, and the person at this point start withdrawing from social activities and becomes emotional unstable.

This however can lead to poor academic performance especially when the student start using substance or develop a habit of substance abuse in order to get over depression.

Depression is a leading cause of suicidal behavior and suicide among young people, an onset occurring earlier in life than in past decades.

Some of the causes of depression among school students are:

STRESS; which can occur when there are too many activities but little time to take care of them. When you are struggling to meet up with assignments and worried sick about grades, it can affect the general body performance and lead to break down of the system, leading to anxiety disorder.

INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIP; combining studies and relationships in the campus can be draining especially when you meet people who are highly demanding.

FEAR OF THE FUTURE; when you are always beating yourself and worried sick about the uncertainties of the future. The constant asking of questions of what the future will look like when still in school is an unhealthy lifestyle.

PEER PRESSURE; making some decisions that are harmful to you just to please your friends and belong. Just have in mind that any friend you have to indulge in bad behavior to please is not worth keeping. Do away with them before it is too late.

What to do:

Live a happy and healthy life. Try as much as possible to avoid all activities that can stand in your way of happiness. Cut out friends that are draining you and causing you emotional wreck because they must not be part of your life.

Avoid peer pressure, where you accept to live a life of substance consumption which is capable of messing up your mind. Stay afloat and engage in activities that makes you happy.

So kind of you to address this issue. Depression is unhealthy for us especially students. I only hope we stop the causes especially peer pressure and pressure from thoughts about the future..
