5 Tips Towards More Effective Studying In The University

in CampusConnect3 years ago

Do you often feel like your study habits simply aren't good enough? Do you also ponder upon what you could probably do to perform better in your classes and examinations?
Several students realize that their secondary school study habits are not very effective in the university. This is understandable, as the university is very different from secondary school. Classes are much bigger, reading becomes more intense, classes are much more demanding and lots more other contributing factors.
There are many effective study strategies out there that have proven to be effective for studying in the university. Today, I'll be sharing with you 5 tips towards improving your studying.

1. Break Your Studying Into Sessions

This is important because the average student will only pay attention for about 25-30 minutes of lectures, reading or studying.

After 25-30 minutes, an average student's efficiency will start to diminish almost rapidly. That's why the advice to study more is not really effective at all.
What you should do is to break your study time into 20-30 minutes chunks. After completing each of these study session chunks, you should do something fun or at least different from studying. Also, when your overall study sessions are completed for the day, you should give yourself a tangible reward for doing it.
Reinforcement of positive things builds good study habits and as an added benefit, you're training yourself to study—as you keep doing this, you'll realize that you'll be able to study for even longer and longer on each study session.

2. Create Your Own Dedicated Study Area

The reason to do this, is that our environment, the context we find ourselves largely determines our behaviors. For example, if you study in a place where there are likely other activities that you could do as well like, play video games, sleep or hang out with friends, it gets really hard to immerse yourself into your study.
What you should do is find an area specifically used for studying, so the context of the situation makes it easier for you to get immersed into your studies.

3. Study Actively

At some point you must have probably realized that the more active you are in your learning, the more effective you become.
The best way to do this rather than go memorizing or reading and rereading is to first ask questions about yourself before studying. What is it that you're learning?
What you're learning always likely falls into 1 out of 2 categories, it's either it's factual or it's conceptual.
For the most part, concepts seem more important than facts, because once you're truly understood a concept, it's sticks in your memory for an incredibly long time, like almost forever. Facts on the other hand, can easily drift away from your memory.
The best way to study a concept is by learning it actively.

4. Take More Effective Notes

After class, as soon as possible add some more to your notes so you can actually solidify the concepts in your mind.
If you forget something ask a colleague who also took really good notes, use the internet or wait till the next class to ask the lecturer before he starts the next class to clarify it for you.

5. Summarize Or Teach What You Have Learnt

You might discover that the best way to actually learn something is to teach it.

Reasons for doing this include:

• It's a great form of active studying because you're getting your brain to recall all the information, so you can basically summarize it for somebody.

• You'll actually end up making sure you fully understand the subject by explaining it to somebody who doesn't know it—It helps you pinpoint gaps in your own understanding of the subject.

I really hope these study tips will get to help you maximize your studying habits in your future study endeavors.
