I wonder was he drunk or did he look drunk. It's good to have helpful children around I wonder how the story ends. In the boat or next the boat and if it's in how will the boat owner feel?
Can you tell me more about the pictures?
In rural areas of China, the concept of farm time is very important. This means that farmers cannot have leisure and recreation during the busy farming season. Outside of these important agricultural time periods, farmers often have a great deal of spare time. Many farmers use this time for recreation: for example, playing cards or drinking alcohol.
Most of the older farmers indulge in drinking, often getting very drunk. Drunk people cannot walk properly and have to be assisted. This old farmer was so drunk that he was helped into the boat by his two children, and he had to lie down and fall asleep. The boatmen were often villagers from the neighborhood who knew where to take these drunken people.
I found it interesting to read about the life of farmers in China and how they kill time. You have an attractive way of telling and I hope to read more from you.
Thank you for taking the time to comment and reply.
A background knowledge: most of China's rural areas are closed social environments. Villagers seem to believe more in verbal moral constraints than in the letter of the law on paper. Villagers care about being able to meet a wider range of people through limited socialization.
The Chinese peasants' concept is closer to the law of nature: fate rules everything in life. When they are healthy and the environment is suitable, they accept happiness; when they are sick and suffer disasters, they accept suffering. It's hard for them to change this view and they won't be open and creative.

If this works it is a wise thing to do. Perhaps the limits make them more open and creative to meet people?

In a way it must be relaxing to accept. No matter what the situation is 🤔
Indeed. Whether it's happiness or misery, farmers always take it in stride.
