Cyber City Oedo 808
Three criminals in the year 2808 enlist in a program that reduces their extremely lengthy prison sentences by bringing in other criminals. While the chance to reduce a hefty sentence is promising for their futures, fighting crime is just as life threatening.
The episodes take place in three parts, with each episode focusing on a different criminal as they fight throughout the neon metropolis of Oedo. Each character was imprisoned for the crimes using technology, and are released from their orbital prison to use their skills to bring in more threatening cyber criminals.
Roaming through Oedo, the criminals have electronic collars around their necks, which is set to detonate remotely after a certain amount of time; this includes failing to achieve their goals. The opportunity to reduce their sentences of 300 years becomes a race against time and death itself.
With the anime very detailing its dystopian reliance on technology, Cyber City Oedo 808 follows the common traits of the cyberpunk genre: large, neon skyscrapers show its late capitalist society. Police officers order the execution of criminals before trials, providing they have admitted to the crimes they've committed. The aesthetic is that of excessive 90's punk clothing and hairstyles. It's very much true cyberpunk, if not the most cyberpunk anime there is; which says a lot given the genre's other popular entries.
The common themes of cyborgs, robots, and AI really makes its narrative true to the genre, with a lot of action scenes focusing on the use of high technology and various technological enhancements, not just in humans. At around 45 minutes per episode, each story is essentially a short film.
