The most famous of the Sennehunde also known as Swiss mountain dogs and the Bernese is distinguished because it is the only one with the longest, smooth coat. The story behind the breed is not clear at the very least. Many experts believe that this breed's origins are linked through an earlier time, the Roman arrival in Switzerland and the Roman mastiffs were crossbred with the native dogs of the flock. This resulted in a robust dog which was able to endure the Alpine weather , and was able to serve as a draft dog as well as a flock guard herder, drover as well as a general farming dog.

Despite their usefulness, very little attempts were made to maintain the breed intentionally. At the end of the 1800s it was clear that the breed was at risk of becoming extinct. In the late 1800s, professor Albert Heim initiated a study of Swiss dogs which resulted in the recognition that of Bernese Mountain Dog as one of the breeds that existed. They were found in valleys within the lower Alps. With the Dr. Heim's efforts the dogs were advertised across Switzerland as well as Europe. The most impressive specimens could be seen in the Durrbach region and at one point, they gave that breed their name Durrbachler. The breed's popularity grew and its name changed, changing to Bernese Mountain Dog. The first Bernese arrived in America in 1926. Official AKC recognition was awarded in 1937.
