DEWINUWARA RAJA MAHA VIHARAYA

A beautiful place 4 ½ km from Matara, Sri Lanka. This temple is also named the “Girihel” temple. Devinuwara means the city of Gods. This temple was built by King Dapulsen.
Later, in the 16th century (1587), the temple and the old city of Dondra were destroyed by the Portuguese and rebuilt by King Rajasinghe II (1635 - 1687) of the Kandy Kingdom. The ruins of ancient temples which were destroyed by the Portuguese can be seen in the vicinity of the present temple premises.

I strongly recommend this place to all travelers. It is much nicer to visit here early in the morning. A calm environment increases their beauty. There are also many shrines of gods such as God Vishnu, God Kandasami. So this place is very important to Sri Lankan people. A place with historical values.
