Rogel Aguilera case

Rogel Aguilera-Mederos, a 26-year-old Cuban teenager, has been sentenced to 110 years in prison for a 2019 traffic mishap in which he killed four people after crashing the truck he was driving loaded with lumber into a line of cars, causing a fire.

According to Lakewood Police Department investigators, Aguilera-Mederos was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the incident and had no prior criminal record.

As a result of the incident, Miguel Angel Lamas Arellano, 24, William Baily, 67, Doyle Harrison, 61, and Stanley Politano, 69, were killed, while a number of other individuals were injured.

Last Friday, Colorado First Judicial District Attorney Alexis King filed a motion for the court to schedule an entirely new sentencing reconsideration hearing.

"Because Colorado law required sentencing in this situation, the law further makes it possible for the court to reconsider its sentence in an exceptional case involving unusual and extenuating situations," the prosecutor wrote.

At least two protests took place this week in front of the Colorado Congress and several truck drivers have announced on social networks that they would not use state highways in solidarity with Aguilera-Medero.

On Tuesday, reality TV star Kim Kardashian spread a message of solidarity with Aguilera-Medero on her networks, joining her voice to that of several jurists and activists who have sentenced the so-called mandatory minimum sentences, which have allowed a 110-year sentence for Aguilera-Mederos.

Kardashian recalled how the judge in the case himself acknowledged that he would not have appreciated sentencing the boy to such a lengthy sentence, however that state law did not allow him to reduce it at his discretion.

"What I will mention is that if I had the discretion, this could not be my sentence," Judge A said.

However, how does one explain this lengthy sentence and how is it feasible for a judge to have no discretion to rule justice in certain places in the U.S.?
