The watercourses of the Roussenski Lom Natural Park are populated by 22 species of fish, at the same time there are rare species of shells and snails. Remarkable was the huge density of dragonflies of the genus Calopteryx, which flew back and forth or sat in the sun on the lush vegetation that borders the watercourse, at the edge of the forest…
The herpetofauna of the Roussenski Lom Natural Park is represented by 10 species of amphibians and 19 species of reptiles, including the water turtle and two species of land turtles, then the wall lizard, the limbless lizard; among the snakes, the horned viper is also present. The only gecko species in Bulgaria is also present here: it is interesting to note how on this bank of the Danube there are different thermophilic species, which do not end up populating the opposite, northern bank of the river.
It is pleasant to sit right on the edge of the cliff, in the wind that ‘massages’ the vegetation, undulating the dry steppe and pulling on the bushes hanging from the stone. Some great squirrels (Apus melba) pass at an astonishing speed past me, with their flight giving the impression of absolute safety in every movement of them. From here on the edge of the precipice you can see, somewhere below, the shepherd smelling of cheese, walking his stinking goats, among bushes with enticing aromas. You can see birds of prey spinning under you in search of prey.
