Broccoli 🥦
Different foods cultivated on earth are classified into different categories; while some fall in the class of fruits, some are nuts, spices, vegetables and so on. Vegetables then consist of a lot of varieties ranging from varying colours, taste and texture. In vegetables, we have a prominent species known as broccoli.
Botanically addressed as brassica oleracea, broccoli is one of the popular vegetables on earth. The mass of green could also be known to be edible flowers as they look like a conjoined bouquet of flowers.

Morphologically, broccolis each have a thick head of florets with a thick short stem; usually they are found in green or purple colour. Of course, They share a similar appearance with cauliflower.
Nutritional facts.
Nutrients wise, these vegetables are rich in vitamin C, K and folates. They are not lacking in minerals like potassium and iron. Broccolis are also very well enriched with carotenoids, flavonoids, soluble and insoluble fiber, indoles and moderate amount of calories which helps to manage weight gain in men.
All these in the veggie, gives it the ability to prevent cancer, help the heart function properly, support the immune and digestive systems when consumed.
Cultivation:
Broccolis are native to the Calabria region in Italy and have been well cultivated there since the 6th century before being introduced to England, the European in the 18th century.
They grow well in cool areas rather than in the hot weather like summer.
The method of using synthetic fertilizers to grow them in large scales is adopted; as well as the organic use of manures.
According to research, it is not compulsory to cultivate them in the soil as one could also grow them in nutrients-rich solutions!
They do not grow more than 90cm tall within 14 weeks and are harvested with shears or hand before the florets turn yellow.
Varieties
Popular types of this veggie include:
- Calabrese, which is named after its place of origin.
- Sprouting broccoli, which could come in white or purple colour.
- Purple cauliflower, which is not a cauliflower but a broccoli with purple colour in its florets’ tips
- Romanesco.
- Broccolini.
Broccolis in kitchen:
They can be eaten raw or after being well garnished. In the kitchen, broccoli can be boiled, roasted, minced, sliced or baked in an oven.
