Steem-agro Contest: "Basic Knowledge In Agriculture"
Hi guys, it is another opportunity to share with us some facts about agriculture so you are welcome to this publication. We are looking at "Basic Knowledge In Agriculture"
Photosynthesis is a process through which photosynthetic organisms, plants, cyanobacteria, and algae transform light energy, basically from the sun, to chemical energy essential to drive their metabolism.
Photosynthesis often points to oxygenic photosynthesis, a process of oxygen production. Chemical energy is stored by photosynthetic organisms generated within compounds containing carbons such as glycogen, starches, sugars, and cellulose
Photosynthesis is also the process by which plants make their food. Carbon dioxide and water are used by plants in the presence of sunlight to generate glucose.
- Due to photosynthesis in the sun, energy is locked in fuel.
- It makes certain that all living species are given access to oxygen in the atmosphere.
- Plants, sustained by photosynthesis, are the wellspring of fossil fuels.
- The degree of photosynthesis affects the productivity of crops.
Plants need a diverse range of elements to grow, keep physiological functions, and generate offspring. Carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen are elements drawn from water and air. Others like nickel and chloride are required in very small amounts that are found in soil. The rest must be added through fertilization.
The table below shows most of the nutrients and their functions:
Nitrogen (N) | Key part of proteins, hormones, chlorophyll, vitamins and enzymes necessary for plant life, and genetic material |
Phosphorus (P) | Necessary for every energy-consuming process in the plant |
Potassium (K) | Essential for sugars and starch in the plant |
Calcium (Ca) | Essential for the growth of cells and division, and influences the movement of water in cells |
Magnesium (Mg) | Plays a role in enzymatic reactions and helps in energy generation |
Sulfur (S) | Necessary for the synthesis of chlorophyll |
Mixed farming is a class of farming that includes both the growing of crops and the rearing of livestock. Though initially, it mostly served domestic consumption, currently it is serving commercial purposes.
Crop cultivation alongside the raising of animals for meat, eggs, or milk clearly exhibits mixed farming.
This is the practice of growing a sequence of diverse categories of crops in the same area across a series of growing seasons. This practice mitigates the reliance of crops on a particular set of nutrients, pest as well as weed pressure, alongside the chances of developing resistant pests and weeds.
The growing of the same crop in the same place in a row for many years, referred to as monocropping, gradually results in the depletion of certain soil nutrients and opts for both a very competitive pest as well as weed community.
The role of the agricultural sector in my country (Nigeria) cannot be overemphasized. Besides being concerned with the responsibility of making certain food security among other intricate ones, other aspects exists contributing to economic growth alongside innovation and agriculture in Nigeria can enhance.
The roles ordinarily attributed to the agricultural sector in a developing economy such as Nigeria are those of:
- Composing a key source of foreign exchange earnings
- Supplying sufficient raw materials to a developing industrial sector
- Provision of a market for the industrial sector products
- Constituting the main source of employment
- Providing sufficient food for a growing population
