Hi friends,

I am Jyoti from India. Hope you are all enjoying the weekend holidays, here I am going to participate in the SEC S20 W1 contest: https://steemit.com/hive-118902/@xkool24/sec-s20w1-impact-of-climate-change-on-agriculture organised by Steem-Agro

Impact of Climate Change on Agriculture

Describe in detail how agricultural productivity is affected by climate change.

Climate change impacts agriculture and its related industries. This is expected to impact the country's economic growth.

In my state of Tamil Nadu, the rainy season has shifted from November to January, indicating a change in the weather patterns. Currently, since people believe rain only comes with storms, farmers are now uncertain about how much to cultivate.

As long as the essential elements of water, land, fire, air and sky remain unchanged, which are crucial for the existence of various living beings, including humans, there is no threat to living creatures. However, when the climate changes, living beings, including humans, must also adapt. Due to limited impact of scientific advancements on food production, we still rely on agriculture for food production.

The timing of the seasons is crucial in farming operations. Because of climate change, there are increased occurrences of both rain and drought. As a result of the monsoon's failure this year, rainfed farming, as well as Kurvai and Samba cultivation, have also been unsuccessful. Each year, farmers plant crops during the month of Adi and gather them during the month of Thai.

Confused farmers don't know about the rainfall so they don't know when to start crops, as the situation has drastically shifted because of climate change. Because of climate change, there is a decrease in rainfall during the rainy season and an increase in rainfall during the other seasons, which is impacting agriculture and farmers livelihood.

Discuss how extreme rains and extreme droughts damage crops.

Climate change has significantly affected agriculture and its process around the world, creating many challenges for farmers and affecting agricultural production and livelihoods. Climate change induced uneven and irregular rainfall, also droughts, and heat waves.

Moreover it changing pest and disease patterns, reduced water availability, changing cropping patterns, crop failures, and reduced yields are severely affecting agricultural practices and farm incomes.

The climate has changed all over the world. Once flooded areas became drought. The number of districts that have changed from flood prone areas to drought areas has increased more than the number of districts that have changed from drought to flood prone areas.

Sudden torrential rains, floods, storms, heat waves, sea level rise, etc. are taking place in many parts of the world in recent times. As a result, farmers will have to abandon agriculture and become climate refugees. Rising temperatures and droughts affect agricultural production and the nature of agricultural production. This climate change is expected to cause many weather changes and thereby affect the crops.

Discuss in stages how new pests and diseases are emerging as a result of climate change AND what measures farmers can take to prevent them.

Climate change increases in temperature can lead to increased pest infestations and water shortages. Farmers should use modern methods to protect their crops from pests and diseases so that they can save their crops. They should use organic fertilizer to produce immunity to their crops and use pesticides that are not harmful to their crops, soil, and the environment.

Farming with composted organic matter. Not using artificially manufactured products in any way. In particular, the first step in organic farming is to create infrastructure to convert the composted waste generated at the farm site into compost instead of burning it. It works based on the Law of Invariance of Energy.

Generally cow, goat, pig waste and leaf compost, dead bodies of animals increase soil fertility and help in plant growth which gives resistance to crops.

Discuss what changes in irrigation systems are required due to climate change.

We should be looking forward to the changes in irrigation systems that are required due to climate change. Water management is the practice of dealing with rainfall scarcity and variability, which occurs at some point in most parts of the world.

Water sources such as

  • Wells
  • Bore wells
  • Ponds
  • Llakes
  • Rivers
  • Dams,
  • Canals etc.

These are the necessary sources of irrigation. Some farmers use irrigation to fill the deficit. Canal irrigation, which irrigates fields through furrows between rows of crops, and teak irrigation, which stores water throughout the field.
Sprinkler irrigation for soils that are unable to retain moisture for a long time, and drip irrigation in which water is dripped very close to plant roots during periods of low rainfall are used in modern times.
In general, standing water in arable land is harmful to plants, so care should be taken in watering. Around 60 percent of fresh water is used for agriculture worldwide.

Rainwater harvesting and wastewater management scheme

Construction of seepage ponds with concentrated tube wells, large medium, and small dams, farm ponds, village ponds, village ponds etc. are being carried out. At the same time, due to climate change, it is necessary to make precautions, for example, by cutting canals around the crop field, and when the flood is more than necessary, it should be made to leave without affecting the crop.

Explain the two best ways to respond to climate change.

There are two approaches to handling change!

  • 1 Reduce the temperature of the planet

To achieve this, less coal and other petroleum-based fuels must be used, trees must be preserved and grown, and clean infrastructure must be supported.

  • 2 Prepare to face the natural calamaties
Constructing vital infrastructure to withstand extreme weather conditions like storms, hurricanes, droughts, and floods The paper provides numerous examples of countermeasures, such as seawalls to prevent coastal erosion in the near future, to combat rising temperatures. However, climate threats will materialize over an extended period of time if they are not incorporated into a long-term plan.

I like to invite

Observations and suggestions:

. Your have good understanding on climate change impacts andnhave explained that very nicely
. You have also have a good knowledge base as you explain extreme rains and droughts impacts on agricultural productivity but expected more details on emerging new pests and diseases. I hope you give more comprehensive details next time.

. Generally, you have a good explanation for all other task questions and have presented your publication nicely

Thank you for your participation.
We hope to see you in week 2.😊
