Basic Knowledge in Agriculture #18

Hi friends, it is really good to be back after the long break due to reasons best known to me. Climate change affects all sectors of life, and agriculture is excluded; climate change is just focused on the change of weather conditions of a particular place or region at a particular time.

What do you understand by Climate change?

Climate change in agriculture is defined as the alterations in weather patterns, like precipitation and temperature, which are often caused by global climate change; this then leads to agricultural practices and crop yields, which may sometimes lead to reduced food production and disruption of food security worldwide.

Climate change deals with the change of the weather conditions, it can change for the better or the worse, for instance, it may rain heavenly in a particular location and suddenly stop due to the sudden change of climate, climate change affects the agricultural sectors the most and can either be of benefits to farmers or not, if the unfavorable temperature becomes favorable you will say that the climate change has been good on agricultural, but in a situation where they are the accurate amount of rain in a particular place and suddenly the rain stops to fall and becomes drought, we will see that the climate change has hurt agricultural activities.

Talk about the effect of climate change on Agriculture.

Climate change impacts agriculture through its way of weather patterns, which may lead to sudden events like floods, droughts, disruption of the growing season, leading to low crop yields, insect pest infestation, etc.

Main effects of climate change on agriculture

Climate change leads to temperature fluctuations, if the temperature becomes intensively high plants will grow less, and its effects will be negative on plant's development and make offspring grow slowly and produce less, this will then result in reduced yield and total crop failure, then happens in a region with high or hot climates, in Nigeria, it is mainly in the northern region where they are intensive sunlight which makes people experience certain disease.

Plants grow well in good climatic conditions

Live stocks require moderate temperature regions or areas to live and perform the act of reproduction, if they stay in extreme heat conditions their skin colors will change, reduced milk production and low meat production, some species of live stocks may not exist anymore, and the live stocks will have low fertility and make industries and farmers go on loss, it will also lead to low for security and make food scares.

Climate change also results in droughts; when there is a low or complete absence of rain due to climate change, it results in droughts. This usually has negative effects on soil moisture and causes a reduction in crop production due to low yield.

Flooding is another climatic factor that affects agriculture; this is caused when the climatic condition changes into excessive rainfall, which often destroys infrastructure and crops; this climate change causes the washing away of the topmost layer of the soil, and flood destroys properties and lives as well.

In addition, higher temperatures can also affect the life cycle of pests and plant diseases. Some types of pests develop more quickly in warm conditions, which can make the situation worse for farmers.
