A Great Time

With a smack, Father slammed the brochure on the table. Look, he said cheerfully, I have booked this for you. He pretended it was a holiday but it wasn't. You can go there in a week. His face beamed as he opened the brochure and read out the amazing facilities. Ma went to buy a suitcase and some extra amenities listed. I didn't want to hear him because it was pretty clear what he wanted and that was Mum and the house all to himself. He had never been happy with my presence and the attention Mum gave to me.

So I ended up in a boarding school. Of course not in my own country because he didn't want to risk me finding my way back home. I had to go abroad because there are good schools there and I would learn manners right away, he added. Student life is the time of your life he beamed. I didn't know anything and didn't say anything either when I saw him get into the car and drive away whistling after he had thrown my suitcase on the gravel path.

There I am standing like an idiot, dumped like a dog, thrown out on the street.
The food here is disgusting and by the looks of it. I'm not the only one with a long face in the picture. I hate school pictures and especially teachers who think pictures are fun to have for later. Who wants to remember such a rotten time?

‘Enjoy it, this is the best time of your life,’ read the card thrown in the mailbox a week later. I hate this picture taken by the school photographer. I wish they would all be thrown away. It is nothing more than proof of who is pulling the strings and calling the shots.
