A generation ago, vitamin B12 deficiency was not common among people. Fast forward to the present, with more and more of us becoming vegetarians and vegans, the number of people with vitamin B12 deficiency has become common. The reason for this is Vitamin B12 is mostly found in meat, fish, eggs and milk and products derived from them. 

Vitamin B12 is produced by bacteria and therefore some vegan or vegetarian food that contains bacteria may also contain Vitamin B12. One examples of such food is tempeh. Vitamin B12 has also been found in mushrooms, miso, seaweed, pickles and other fermented foods.

Generally they are not found in sufficient quantities in these foods to be considered reliable sources of Vitamin B12.  

Since Vitamin B12 is essential for the proper functioning of processes such as metabolism, DNA synthesis, blood cell formation and many others, it is important to ensure sufficient intake of the vitamin through your food or with supplements. Vegan and vegetarians may have to pay extra attention to the sources of Vitamin B12 in their food and may have to do regular test to ensure your body has sufficient vitamin B12 for its proper functioning.
