Contest Alert-Crop or livestock farming?what's your choice?
Greetings everyone, I am much delighted to talk more about crop farming and livestock farming. Here in my country Nigeria we are richly blessed with resources including abundant farmland to carry out agricultural activities. We have different seasons in a year, which are all beneficial to both livestock and crop farming.
In our small farmland, I have been able to plant and grow crops, harvest them too. So I have little knowledge about crop farming, how to go about it and the benefits for growing crops. We also kept aside a place where we can rear farm animals such as goats and sheep.
Which kind of farming do you practice
The pictures below really shows that I practice mixed farming which involves both crop and livestock farming. I just saw it as an upgrade not just focusing on one field of business. Long before now, I was only into crop farming where I grow so many crops which were annual crops. The economy switched up the practice and I now enjoy the two not minding the stress I go through putting the two together. I somehow prefer crop farming to livestock farming because of so many reasons. The crop farming is the surest type of farming, you reap what you sow but livestock seems to be the other way round.
Why do you prefer this kind of farming to the other
I prefer crop farming to livestock because it's simple for anyone to start up, it's not expensive to get seedlings but livestock needs more money to get farm animals and also alot to feed them. Growing of crops is very essential because in this part of the country, farm crops are needed every day for food production and for medicinal purposes so if you grow crops just know you're gaining alot from it with little stress.
Most crops are been processed into other essential food which are used for other purposes and also eaten in different ways.
What has been your biggest challenge in this area since you begin this aspect of farming
I haven't faced alot in this very type of farming because it disadvantages hardly take place. My biggest challenge is having a large land for crop farming, crop farming really needs land to carry on planting and harvesting, you can't be managing space with lots of crops. The second challenge I do face is pest and insects damage, mostly the pest that affects corn. It's getting so dreadful and it's affecting the price of corn in so many parts because of the pest damages.
