As the View Slowly Fades — Milk Challenge, Day 1

in ART LOVERS5 years ago

So why not?

Taking part in @whatsup's "Milk Challenge" for a while here... at least that's my ambition. We'll see how it goes... but I do like challenges, and I am pretty much here because I enjoy social blogging.

So the very boring photo below is the front lawn on my auntie's house in Denmark. I used to go there as a kid; aforesaid auntie actually helped raise me... whenever my globetrotting parents were somewhere else.

When I was a kid, you could see the bay and the local town, at the bottom of the hill, some three miles away. This photo is from 2015, and all you see now are trees.

May auntie fought a valiant fight to keep the view for as long as possible, but the wilderness won. I suppose it goes to show that nature doesn't really care what we want... as soon as we look the other way, things grow back over.

This is yours truly, sitting in the splashing pool on that same patch of grass in June of 1962. I'm not even two years old...

It's funny how the encroaching trees and bushes can feel like a metaphor for our lives, as well... our view of the world and our place in it feels like it is encroaching.

Maybe that's what aging does? Somehow, I think that's just a small part of the reality. Our Millennial kids feel the encroachment, too... and they are in their 20's, wondering if the educations the student loans they'll be paying on for another 30 years even did a damn thing to get them "the better life" they were promised.

But let's not get all heavy and uncool, here!

The view may be gone from that small patch of grass, and my auntie is long gone, as are my parents... but at least I have the blessing of being able to — whenever we can go back to Denmark to visit — go sit on that patch of grass in the sun, and touch one of the very few "constants" I have had in my life!

Thanks for reading!

I never understand why people planting trees.

Most of the trees at my auntie's place came there by natural expansion, e.g. bird droppings, and such. I suppose green is a "restful color," for the eyes...

Nice post for the Milk Challenge. You were a cute lil' devil back then ;)

Just an idea, someone could adopt the milk challenge for a week and pass it on!
